A 20-point Code of Ethics for Human Fraternity for 2020

By Fr. Dr. Rif’at Bader

The UAE brethren have excelled by marking the first anniversary of the signing of the “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together” that was signed last year by His Holiness Pope Francis and Sheikh Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyib on the UAE soil, which included calling for holding the “Arab Media Convention for Human Fraternity".

After celebrating the Year of Tolerance and the World Interfaith Harmony Week, it is nice to "dedicate" the media and orient it positively in order to enhance human dignity on the one hand, and to encourage harmony among people with different religious affiliations on the other.

At the end of the convention, the moving moment was the announcement of a code of ethics for human fraternity which is concerned with directing the Arab media to be supportive of disseminating the contents and values of “human fraternity”, so that they would not be ink on paper but rather be reflected on people’s daily life and on their intertwined relations based on cordiality and respect. The document was called the twenty-point principles of the year 2020 as it contained 20 items that would help mass an Arab media members who face the speeches of extremism and exclusion of others which regrettably afflicted several media outlets, especially social media outlets.

Following is the Code of Ethics for Human Fraternity that addresses the principles of journalistic work in the service of fraternal brotherhood:
-It is important to preserve freedom of expression as a human right.
-Media professionals should promote the value of friendship and mutual acceptance of others in coexistence.
-That all type of hate speech be rejected, especially regarding religion.
-That all expressions dividing humanity be rejected.
-To highlight how innocent civilians are affected by war and violence.
-That in support of the sanctity of human life, media professionals do nothing to promote acts of war and violence against humanity, including publishing discourses justifying bloodshed or favoring war.
-To avoid the use of stereotypes.
-That the media be in solidarity with migrants and uphold their right to a dignified life.
-That content containing human values must be encouraged.
-That the media promote and protect family.
-Encourages the promotion of the rights of women as human rights.
-The Importance to promote the rights of the disabled and not to publish anything negative against them.
-That the media respect rights of children and help in the fight against trafficking of children.
-That media professionals be formed to adopt these principles in their work.

The participants in the convention, including the Jordanian media delegation, signed the document. It is nice to have these principles coincide with a former code signed in Amman last year following a convening of a conference sponsored by the Catholic Center for Studies and Media in Jordan. Thus, there is a new positive trend for media in our Arab world and throughout the entire world. Let us welcome this trend through joint action to be achieved on the ground.

Long live human fraternity, and long live the media that disseminate this brotherhood.
