The stand of the Churches on the abominable annexation plan

By Fr. Dr. Rif’at Bader

On these fast-paced days--at a time when the peoples of the world get preoccupied with issues relevant to the development of the pandemic, its spread in several countries, its decline and reemergence in other countries, in addition to international and popular campaigns against racism and discrimination--the world holds its breath in light of a decision that would undermine the pillars of peace in the Holy Land and the world. It is the annexation decision that Israel intends to implement despite the rejecting and denouncing international position.

Here in Jordan, we are in favor of clear and explicit diplomacy, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II Ben Al-Hussein, may God protect him. We also support his stand on rejecting the Israeli measures related to annexing the Jordan Valley and parts of the West Bank, as these measures negatively affect the Palestinian cause and harm the supreme interests of the Jordanian state.

Touching on the Church’s stance regarding this abominable decision we can address in this regard two complementary and compatible positions. The first one is that Vatican Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher received a phone call from Saeb Erekat, chief negotiator and secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization. During the phone call, Archbishop Gallagher asserted the Holy See’s respect for international law and the relevant United Nations resolutions being an indispensable element for the two peoples to live side by side in two states, within the borders internationally recognized before 1967. Furthermore, the archbishop stressed that the Holy See would follow the situation closely, and expressed concern about any future actions that could further compromise dialogue, hoping that the Israelis and the Palestinians would be soon able to find once again the possibility for directly negotiating an agreement, with the help of the international community, so that peace may finally reign in the Holy Land, so beloved by the followers of religions.

In the second one, we review the statement issued by the Council of Patriarchs and Heads of the Holy Land Churches in the Holy Land on the Israeli unilateral annexation plans. The statement says that as a result of the stagnation of the Peace Process in the Middle East between the Israelis and Palestinians, an array of plans for Israel to unilaterally annex West Bank land, backed mainly by right-wing factions, raises serious and catastrophic questions about the feasibility of any peaceful agreement to end the decades’ long conflict, one that continues to cost many innocent lives as part of a vicious cycle of human tragedy and injustice.

The statement added that the Council of Patriarchs and Heads of the Holy Land Churches, which includes 13 active Churches in one of the holiest places in the world, views such unilateral annexation plans with the utmost concern and calls upon the State of Israel to refrain from such unilateral moves, which would bring about the loss of any remaining hope for the success of the peace process. The Council also called upon the United States of America, the Russian Federation, the European Union, and the United Nations to respond to these unilateral annexation plans with a time-delimited and phased Peace Initiative in line with International Law and United Nations resolutions on the matter, in order to guarantee a comprehensive, just, and long-lasting peace in this part of the world that is considered Holy by the three Abrahamic Faiths.

We can add the position of the World Evangelical Alliance which issued a statement stating that the annexation plan threatens to end the hopes for a negotiated peace solution between Israel and Palestine. This is an important statement at a time when Anglican parties, particularly in the United States, express unlimited support for the pro-Israel US policies.

We call on the Lord of Peace and Mercy to have the hearts and minds take more wise and determined positions that comply with God’s will, to attain justice, security and peace. We also call on the people of good will to act for the good of the generations to come and of all the children of Abraham, according to a statement made by the late King Hussein Ben Talal, may his soul rest in peace.
