The train of youth dialogue sets off anew

By Fr. Dr. Rif’at Bader

No one denies the fact that the "train" of youth dialogue in Jordan set off years ago, yet its momentum increased in the past few days due to the directives of His Majesty the King, who gives due attention to those who constitute 70 per cent of the population of the Kingdom, as well as due to the efforts of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein Ben Abdullah who has become a global symbol of youthful vitality based on sound planning and sagacity.

The prime minister has met with a group of youths who represent all shades of the homeland. The fact that Dr. Mohammad Abu Rumman launches, within the ministries of culture and youth, enlightened efforts free from extremism and bigotry--which has regrettably spread in the region over the past decades--augurs well for the society.

I have participated in the celebration marking the launching of the initiative relevant to the youth dialogue at the Upper House of Parliament which was administered by Upper House of Parliament Rabha Al-Dabbas.The opening ceremony included various shades of the Jordanian society. I was pleased to have interfaith dialogue listed within the youth dialogue initiatives since they are unfortunately liable to deviate from the sound path in life so that religious thoughts which open up to neighbors or others who follow different religions can be deformed leading to alienation or hatred for others who are different. Yet, the youth can also be equipped with knowledge and healthy orientations at homes, universities and places of worship so as to acquire sublime thoughts as well as to get involved in interfaith conferences and seminars, or rather engage in constructive cooperation in the service humanity and society.

This coincided with the inauguration of the fifth Danish-Arab Interfaith Dialogue International Conference held under the patronage of HRH Prince Hassan and titled “Muslim-Christian Dialogue Towards a Better Understanding”. Furthermore, a Jordanian youth delegation was at the time participating in the World Youth Congress in Egypt, while a delegation of Christian youths was on the way back from the United Arab Emirates after participating in the weekly Youth Days. Don't you notice how our youth contribute effectively in all fields of social and political sublime activities?

From this premise, the Catholic Center for Studies and Media (CCSM) in Jordan and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung held a conference in Amman on Monday November 5, 2018 titled, “A Jordanian Vision of the Civil State” which was patronized by Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs Engineer Musa Maaytah. The participations of youths from five Jordanian universities had a long-lasting impact in the hearts of the participants and the lecturers, because the future will be build by these youths. It is also important to have the youth get acquainted with the sound mission of our society and with His Majesty King Abdullah II’s Sixth Discussion Paper which deals with the primacy of the law in the state, to be rightly called the civil state. This neither implies having a secular state implying the elimination of the role of religion in state nor giving freedoms without a sense of responsibility. The civil state is synonymous to the word citizenship which implies equality and interaction between rights and duties, as well as with evaluating citizens based on their positive contribution to serving the homeland, society and humanity rather than on their tribal, religious, or sectarian affiliation.

Congratulations to the youth in my country for this new potential of the train of youth dialogue. They can proudly say, "We are the youth and the glorious future is ours."
