“Dear migrants don’t let yourselves be robbed of hope and joie de vivre”

By Domenico Agasso jr

“Each of you has a story, a culture, and a set of precious values; sadly you often also carry experiences of misery, oppression and fear. Your presence in this square is a sign of God’s hope.” The Pope addressed these words to thousands of migrants who gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Sunday Angelus on the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which in this Holy Year of Mercy is also celebrated as a Jubilee of Migrants. The Pope encouraged them not to let themselves “be robbed of the hope and joie de vivre that come from the experience of divine mercy, partly thanks to the people who welcome and help them.”

Francis was “glad to greet the ethnic communities here present, with great affection, all of you in fact, who have come from all over Italy, particularly Lazio”. He then stressed: “May the passage through the Holy Door and the Mass you are about to participate in, fill your hearts with peace.” “I would also like to thank – and you should do so too – the inmates from the town of Opera (northern Italy, Ed.), for the host used in today’s celebration, which they made themselves. Let us give them a round of applause!”

The Pope asked everyone present “to pray to the Lord for the victims of the attacks carried out in recent days in Indonesia and Burkina Faso. May the Lord welcome them into his house and support the efforts of the international community to build peace. Let us pray to the Virgin Mary,” Francis said, reciting the Ave Maria with faithful.

Before the Angelus, the Pope explained that “this Sunday’s Gospel presents the miraculous event which took place at Cana, a village in Galilee, during a wedding feast attended by Mary, Jesus and his first disciples. The Mother points out to her Son that the wine has run out and Jesus, after replying that his time has not yet come, responds to her request by granting the newly married couple the best wine of the entire feast. The Evangelist underlined that ‘Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee and it revealed his glory and his disciples believed in him’.”

Thus, miracles “are extraordinary signs that accompany the preaching of the Good News and aim to arouse and reinforce faith in Jesus. In the miracle at Cana, we are given a glimpse of one of Jesus’ acts of benevolence towards the spouses, a sign that the marriage was blessed by God. Love between man and woman is therefore a good way of living the Gospel and to joyfully set forth on the path of sainthood.”

But the miracle at Cana “does not only apply to married couples. Every human is called to meet the Lord during their lifetime. The Christian faith is a gift we receive at Baptism and it allows us to meet God. Faith goes through moments of joy and of suffering, of light and of darkness, as any genuine experience of love does. The story of the wedding at Cana tries to show us that Jesus does not present himself to us as a judge who is there, ready to condemn our sins, nor as a commander who requires us to blindly follow his orders; he manifests himself as the Husband of mankind, as an elder brother: as the One who responds to the expectations and promises of joy that dwell in the hearts of each and every one of us.”

Francis urged faithful to ask themselves: Do we really know the Lord this way? Do I feel Him close to me and to my life? Am I responding to him according to that spousal love that He shows to me and to every human being every day?” In Francis’ view, “it is about realising that Jesus seeks us out and invites us to make space for him deep within or hearts. We are not alone in this journey of faith with Him: we have received the gift of Christ’s Blood. The great stone amphorae Jesus has filled with water to turn it into wine, are a symbol of the passage from the old to the new alliance: The Blood of Christ replaces the water that was used in the ritual purification. This Blood, which is poured in a sacramental way in the Eucharist, was shed violently in the Passion and on the Cross. The Sacraments, which originate from the Easter Mystery, give us supernatural strength and allow us to savour God’s infinite mercy.”
