“May St. Joseph give young people the ability to risk for their dreams”

By Domenico Agasso Jr/Rome

The Pope in Santa Marta: the putative father of Jesus is the guardian of men’ weaknesses of the “dream of God”. To the Mass participated the families of the Erasmus girls victims of the bus massacre in Spain.

Shall he help the boys and girls to take on “the difficult tasks that have seen in dreams.” So to have the ability to dream, as well as to risk. It is Pope Francis’ invocation to St. Joseph at this morning Mass, March 20, 2017, at Casa Santa Marta. In the middle of the sermon, the figure of Jesus’s foster father, guardian - with fatherly tenderness - of human weaknesses and of “God’s dream”, whose celebration was postponed to today because yesterday, March 19, coincided with Sunday Lent.

The Pontiff celebrated in memory of the thirteen students who participated to the ’Erasmus’ program and died a year ago in a car accident in Spain, Catalonia. Parents and relatives of the Italian girls who died in the bus massacre were present.

As reported by Vatican Radio, the Pope points out St. Joseph’s obedience to the angel who appeared to him in a dream, and who had conceived by the Holy Spirit, as his wife.

Joseph is a silent and obedient man, who carries on himself promises of “descent, heritance, paternity, sonship, stability. “And this man, this dreamer, is able to accept this duty, this grave duty. He has so much to say to us in this time of a strong sense of being orphaned. And so this man takes the promise of God and carries it onward in silence, with strength, he carries it onward so that God’s Will might be done” the Bishop of Rome noted.

St. Joseph can “tell us many things, but does not speak”: he is “the hidden man, the man of silence who has the greatest authority in that moment without letting it be seen.”

Francis puts the emphasis on what God confides to the carpenter “they are weak things: Promises,” and a promise - the Pope says - is weak. As are weak - Francis adds - And then there is the birth of the child, the flight into Egypt, situations of weakness. Yet Saint Joseph takes to heart and carries forward “all these weaknesses” as weaknesses are carried forward: “with so much tenderness,” “with the tenderness with which one takes a child in one’s arms”

Pope Bergoglio highlights: “It is the man who does not speak but obeys, the man of tenderness, the man capable of carrying forward promises so that they may become solid, certain; the man who guarantees the stability of the Kingdom of God, the paternity of God, our sonship as children of God. “ The Pope “likes to think of him as the guardian of our most pure weaknesses: He is capable of giving rise to so many beautiful things from our weaknesses, even from our sins.”

For the Pope, St. Joseph is the guardian of weaknesses so that they might become strong in faith. He received this responsibility during a dream. St. Joseph is a man “able to dream.” He is therefore also the ’guardian of God’s dream of redemption, of saving us all”, The Lord confides in this humble carpenter. “How great was this carpenter!” the Pope exclaimed.

Francis then invokes him: “ grant to all of us the ability to dream, that when we dream great things, beautiful things, we might draw near to the dream of God, the things God dreams about us” In particular, ’to give young people - because he was young - the ability to dream, to risk undertake the difficult tasks they have seen in dreams. “And” to give to all of us the faithfulness that tends to grow when we have a just attitude – Joseph was just – [the faithfulness that] grows in silence, with few words; that grows in tenderness that guards our own weaknesses and those of others.”
