CCSM condemns the bombings of Egypt churches

By Fr. Rif'at Bader

As the tragic news about two terrorist explosions that erupted in Egypt and led to the death of several worshippers was disseminated, Director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media (CCSM) in Jordan Fr. Rif'at Bader expressed his denunciation of the cowardly terrorist acts committed today, April 9, in two peaceful churches while the worshippers were raising palm and olive branches marking Palm Sunday that precedes the glorious Easter celebrations. He called for praying for the souls of the martyrs, for the wounded, for the brotherly children of Egypt, both Christians and Muslims, so that the Almighty God would grant the afflicted families and all the citizens of dear Egypt solace and patience.

Fr. Bader added during the Mass he presided at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Naour, south of the capital Amman, marking Palm Sunday celebrations: "The terror that hit the Egyptian churches is designed to undermine Easter celebrations, to create schism in the Arab Egyptian fabric, including Muslims and Copts, and to let fear and turmoil dominate those who celebrate Easter. The choice of this very day at a time when large masses of people go to churches to pray, including families and children, is designed to mow down the largest number of people and shed innocent blood."

The CCSM director expressed hope that these cowardly terrorism acts would not impact the upcoming historic visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Egypt at the end of this month. Fr. Bader continued: "The Christians of the East, alongside all their Muslim brethren, will always maintain the 'Palm Sunday policy', namely the olive branch which symbolizes solidarity for the attainment of justice and peace, as they will jointly defend the bright religious plurality which has adorned the Middle East over the past centuries.

Before celebrating Mass, hundreds of worshippers from Naour township and the neighboring regions proceeded towards Our Lady of Lourdes grotto and continued their way towards the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church which is affiliated with the Latin Patriarchate. They were raising palm and olive branches and singing hymns for peace in the Arab region and the entire world. They also hoped that peace and security would be restored to the neighboring Arab countries.

The parish priest, Fr. Bader, prayed for all efforts designed to attain peace including those by His Holiness Pope Francis, by all the spiritual leaders, and by all the politicians who work with sincere conscience for peace and for the policy of the olive branch. In this context, he lauded the continuous and unstinting efforts exerted by Jordan through the policies of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ben Al Hussein, whom the whole world highly appreciates, and who leads our beloved Kingdom to the shores of peace, tranquility and progress. He also prayed for the security apparatuses that are vigilant to maintain security and safety of citizens. He noted that he himself and the Church take pride in the awareness, solidarity and the invaluable national unity prevailing between the different shades of the Jordanian society.
