Environment, energy giants to meet in the Vatican

Two-day, closed-door summit with world’s top oil companies, organised by Notre Dame University. They will also meet Pope Francis.

A closed-door meeting in the Vatican organized by an American Catholic university, to bring together the heads of energy corporations with Pope Francis and those in the Holy See dealing with the environment. It is the two-day event scheduled for 8 and 9 June at the Casina Pio IV in the Vatican, home of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, promoted by Notre Dame University. The event will be attended by the highest levels of ExxonMobil, Eni, British Petroleum, Royal Dutch Shell, Equinor (the former Norwegian Statoil) and Pemex, as Reuters informs. Eni will be represented by the managing director Claudio De Scalzi. The title of the conference is "Energy Transition and Care of Our Common Homeˮ.

In paragraph 165 of the encyclical Laudato Si', devoted to the care of creation, Pope Francis wrote: "We know that technology based on the use of highly polluting fossil fuels – especially coal, but also oil and, to a lesser degree, gas – needs to be progressively replaced without delay. Until greater progress is made in developing widely accessible sources of renewable energy, it is legitimate to choose the less harmful alternative or to find short-term solutions".

Many of the energy giants, in addition to oil, have long been involved in the extraction and sale of gas, and are also beginning to look at renewable energy. Increasing pressure on oil companies to reduce polluting emissions affecting climate change is now a fact.

The heads of the multinationals asked for the meeting, during which a suitable space will be dedicated to discussion and comparison. For the Holy See, in addition to the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect for the promotion of integral human development, will participate in the dicastery that deals, among other things, also with environmental protection, economy and sustainable finance. The participants will also meet the author of the encyclical Laudato Si', Pope Francis.

"The meeting ends with a dialogue with the CEOs of the oil companies - Bishop Sanchez Sorondo, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, explains to the press - to know to what extent they are aware that oil is the main cause of climate change, i.e. global warming that is ruining the planet. It is important because today they not only rule the economy but also the politics of many nations, particularly the G20. It is a matter of suggesting to them, and through them to politicians, to invest in renewable energies or in de-carbonisation as a new challenge, as a socio-economic goal, as a source of work and as a source of well-being for our common home. We hope that they will listen to the message, as some have already done. They are the ones who wanted the meeting and we are happy to start a serious, critical and constructive dialogue".

Meanwhile, on 6 June, in Brussels, the World Catholic Climate Movement, together with the three European networks of Episcopal Conferences (COMECE, CCEE, Justice and Peace Europe), is organizing the first "Laudato si' Reflection Dayˮ at European level on the theme of "Sustainable Finance in Europe and the Church".
