Five years after the forcible displacement

By Fr. Dr. Rif’at Bader

On the 5th anniversary of the forcible displacement of Christians from Mosul as well as from the other villages and cities of the Nineveh Plain, we thank the Almighty God for the blessing of life that He bestowed on those who survived the brutal massacres perpetrated by the terrorist ISIS groups in Mosul and elsewhere in the world which led to the untimely death of victims and martyrs. May their pure souls rest in peace, and may their relatives find consolation and solace.

We thank the Almighty God for the grace of faith, which also survived the grip of terrorism. We do not merely say so to be thankful for the survival of only the Christians, but also for the survival of the spiritual pluralism and dedication to faith which enlighten the East, without which the East becomes void of beauty and charm.

We thank God for the blessing of security and stability in Jordan that enabled us to welcome the suffering brethren from Iraq and Syria who found warmth among their welcoming brethren despite the scarcity of resources and the difficulties experienced by our beloved country. Yet, we were able to show anew that we are able to "welcome" the brethren at times of distress.

We thank God for the charity associations that have been cooperating with the public departments in order to alleviate the suffering and show that humanity is still in good shape.

The private and public associations in our country have excelled in demonstrating solidarity and free from the spirit of competition that sometimes occurs among groups that have similar missions. Humanitarian solidarity has prevailed. These associations have excelled in fulfilling their duties in line with the directives of the Hashemite leadership of King Abdullah II Ben Al-Hussein, where Jordan opened its doors wide, and humanitarian charities joined forces in the service of humanity, while brushing aside ethnic, religious or racial differences.

We thank God for the blessing of volunteering, which characterized our Jordanian citizens in all areas of service, and accommodation for the suffering brethren. The act of volunteering emerged as an optimum to give a helpful hand to the public and private institutions.

We thank God for the blessing of sound media that disseminated to the whole world the human suffering, and I do not forget the media delegations that were racing to cover the arrival of one group after the group of the forcibly displaced from Erbil and Kurdistan. This was the first phase of the Iraqis seeking refuge from Mosul and the Nineveh Plain. The media showed that they are siding with humans as well their just issues and causes.

We thank God for the blessing of the religious cooperation between the Christian and Islamic institutions in the service of humanity. Caritas Jordan has taken a leading role in providing temporary accommodation for the incoming brethren. Our Lady of Peace Center was designated as a primary shelter center so that the incoming groups who would be transferred to other assigned sites. Yet, Caritas did not work on its own, as it was supported by the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as well as by other institutions and individuals.

Furthermore, we learned about “close cooperation” among institutions of a religious nature on the one hand and international political and humanitarian institutions on the other with the aim of preserving the dignity of people. I still remember the hosting of 50 people from Iraq at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church of Naour, and how the UAE Red Crescent showed goodness, generosity and good brotherly love.

We thank God for the schools and the education centers that provided services including shelter and food as well as academic, educational and psychological assistance to Syrian and Iraqi children.

We thank God for facilitating convening conferences in our beloved country, which formed new tourism that become known as the "conferences of tourism", and created cooperation with the Jordanian official diplomacy. We also address the international delegations that visited our country in the past five years to closely examine the affairs of the forcibly displaced, the refugees and those who are looking for a safe future for themselves, their children, and their families.

O displaced people, best wishes to you on the blessing of life which is more valuable than anything else. Best wishes to you for keeping the faith of parents and grandparents. We ask God to overwhelm every one of who migrated to another country with blessing, and to grant all those who are still in Jordan a secure future for them and for their children.
