Humility…Humility

Fr. Rif’at Bader-Amman

The celebration marking the creation of new cardinals, the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle, on February 22 was not a traditional nor ordinary event but rather unique and unprecedented. This is attributed to the fact that it is the first event in the papal era of the Pope of simplicity and humility "Francis". It is rather a unique event as it took place in the presence of Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI, who voluntarily chose in an unprecedented move to step down as guide of Peter’s ship a year ago.

In St. Peter's Church there is an "on the stage" Pope and one “Pope” down with the cardinals. This doesn't mean the "superiority" of one on the other. But the situation does not allow for having "two popes". Thus, in order to maintain unity inside the whole Universal Church there should be a pope-emeritus and an active pope.

The emergence of Benedict XVI had a great significance, namely because humility is a characteristic of grand people only who can only be humble. It is contrary to human expectations that the humble is merely the poor, destitute and week with no option but to be “modest”. As for the Church of Peter, humility is the character of the grand people.

The pope-emeritus sat with the cardinals smiling. He was neither dejected nor disillusioned since his historic decision was of his own volition and choice; and since, the Vatican --particularly the leadership of Pope himself –seeks to reveal the former pope with full dignity, prestige and a smile. Benedict XVI, however, reciprocated love and respect, that is why his presence shook the world again particularly as the procession of “Francis” approached him; he took off his white skull cap revealing only one cap. In this very meeting, don’t you visualize the meeting between Virgin Mary and Elizabeth, which mirrored humility and modesty, or even the meeting of John the Baptist with Jesus Christ? Humility reciprocates humility.

As for Francis, we are accustomed to his humility. The way he entered on foot carrying his bag, then exiting the meeting room of consistory "brotherly" with the cardinals is very impressive.

As long as there is humility, the world will still be promising. This is the virtue that makes one looked up to without any obsolescent human considerations. These meetings teach us that being highly viewed by God is much greater than striving to be highly viewed and appreciated by people, for people have their own narrow-minded views, whereas God’s views are without borders.

In the wake of the first such humble emergence of Pope-emeritus before the Pope of modesty, Francis, we have a date with four Popes altogether on April 27. It will be a nonpareil moment of humility when "Francis" will announce in the presence of "Benedict" the beatification of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II.

We are blessed with such an event, which gives us optimism, in a world overwhelmed with sorrows and panting for bread falling off the tables of authorities.
