Jordanian-Lebanese cooperation in the field of dialogue

By Fr. Dr. Rif'at Bader

I have had the opportunity to participate in the First International "Levant Gathering Conference" in Beirut which focused on “dialogue as a way of life and a path of peace”. I was accompanied by a senior Jordanian delegation of notables and former ministers.

At the opening session, Lebanese President Michel Aoun announced that his country had received the approval of more than 165 countries at the United Nations to establish the so-called "Academy of Humans" for dialogue between religions and civilizations. This is, of course, a realization of what Lebanon has sought for decades, namely to be a global center for dialogue. This will not be a center for celebrations but rather for in-depth academic studies and for meeting of students and researchers of different religions, ethnicities and nationalities.

I gave an address during the sessions in addition to the addresses delivered by HE Dr. Kamel Abu Jaber, HE Eng. Sami Halaseh, Member of the Upper House of Parliament Rabha Dabbas, Head of the Syriac Society George Hazou, Mr. Ghassan Qewar, Mr. Samer Qewar and Farah Shnouda.

The guest of honor at the meeting was Head of Department of Dialogue with Islam in the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue Monsignor Khaled Akasheh of Karak, Jordan. His address was remarkably titled, "Yes, I am my brother's guard!" He was honored as a global figure who clearly contributed to advancing dialogue. This honoring was a source of honor for the Vatican where he works and for Jordan as well where he was born and lived.

During the sessions, I presented a paper titled, "Jordanian-Lebanese Cooperation in the Field of Dialogue and Freedoms". I pointed out that there are commonalities between the two brotherly countries. Among these commonalities are the initiatives and dialogue centers launched by both countries. Jordan has launched intellectual dialogues since the 1980s including the ”Amman Message" which was launched 15 years ago, "A Common Word Between Us and You" 2007, and the "World Interfaith Harmony Week" 2010 which was unanimously approved by the United Nations countries. As for Lebanon, it introduced the issue of dialogue in its various universities, marked the unanimous celebration of the Feast of Annunciation by Christians and Muslims which became an official holiday, and witnessed the emergence of leading figures who positively influenced and enriched dialogue.

Furthermore, are we going to witness in the near future cooperation in the fields of “dialogue and freedoms” that maintains harmony with the need to jointly coordinate efforts to combat violent extremism, as well as to promote the values of common living and citizenship that encompasses diversity and religious freedom? We hope so.
It is to be noted that Jordan and Lebanon have shared a common concern, namely welcoming the forcibly displaced and the refugees from Iraq and Syria. Pope Francis referred to Jordan and Lebanon as the "countries that welcome refugees". This term reflects magnanimity, open door policy, hospitality, and openness. Both countries share the call for just peace and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, including the holy city of Jerusalem, because peace in this eternal city will be the key to peace and dialogue in the East and the world.

O Jordan and Lebanon… the world needs both of you, as it awaits further achievements relevant to dialogue and freedoms.
