Young man Fadi Farah Bader sitting in a wheelchair at the Baptism Site

The last wish of the young man Fadi Farah Bader

By Fr. Rif'at Bader

With the onset of this year, members of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem --namely Patriarch Fouad Twal, bishops and priests, met in Amman, Jordan with Her Royal Highness Princess Dina Mired to listen from her on the message of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Hospital, and the services provided by the hospital and its enlightened activities in the service of the community.

At the time, a fraternal dialogue took place during which the Princess replied to questions of priests. She said: “You are our ambassadors who disseminate awareness and promote the values of love.” The priests expressed their readiness to participate in the services offered by the King Hussein Cancer Foundation. They also presented the Princess, who was accompanied by the Foundation's staff members, with practical proposals that would spread among citizens. At this time, I presented a proposal to get the Foundation and the Institution, particularly the sick children, participate in the proposed meeting of His Holiness Pope Francis at the Baptism Site including patients and associations that provide them with services.

The proposal was warmly accepted by the Foundation and the preparatory steps began. The meeting took place on May 24. One of the girls explained her experience, while one of the children presented the Pope with the Foundation's gift in the presence of HH Prince Mired and HH Princess Dina Mired.

The day following the Pope's departure, I was honored to receive a phone call from the Princess who expressed how she was moved by the meeting that took place between the Pope of humility and humanity with the sick and the refugees.

She said that she was greatly impressed by the kindness demonstrated by His Holiness towards the suffering people adding that she was moved by the child who came with his father and presented a gift on behalf of the Foundation. She also referred to the eagerness mapped on the face of the father upon seeing his son meet the Pope. She told at the time that the child was in the center, in his last stages of illness and that his participation in the event at the Baptism Site might be the last wish that came to reality by the Foundation--which had launched the initiative "achieved your dream" to help patients, especially children, achieve their dreams.

One month after the visit, the funeral of the young man, Fadi Farah Bader, took place in the township of Al Wahadneh which is located next to the birthplace of the Prophet Elijah in Ajloun. People were whispering, "Thank God that he achieved his dream by meeting the Pope and forwarding the gift of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation".

I immediately informed the Princess about his death. She was overwhelmed with sadness. Yet, she reiterated the views of other people saying: "Thank God, the Foundation did not fall short of attaining the dream of the young man before his passing away."

As I conversed with the bereaved father who lost his son and whose eyes were welling with tears, he lauded the Foundation that selected his son to present the gift. There was a proposal at the time that he make an address before the whole world, yet his feeble body prevented him from doing so. Thus, he presented the Foundation's gift silently sharing his pain with others but having a persistent hope. That was the happiest day of his life.

Mr. Farah, who worked for years as an educator in the schools of Ajloun public schools, said:" I accompanied Fadi from Al Wahadneh to the Jordan Valley and there we met on the bus allotted to go to the Baptism Site. Upon arrival, the volunteers took care of my son. Upon reaching the assigned seats, they happened to be close to those of HH Prince Mired and HH Princess Dina. Praise the Hashemites who undertake humanitarian positions that impart love and respect for the dignity of man. Her Highness embraced my son and cried passionately. These are the qualities of the Hashemites who support every needy and in pain."

When I wrote these comments, I was on the plane flying from Amman to New York at an altitude of 35,000 feet. From the highest point, I am talking about the meeting that took place at the lowest spot in the vicinity of the Dead Sea.I would like to underline the fact that the message of King Hussein Cancer Foundation is sublime as it launches initiatives, not designed for making profits, but rather for application. It deals with humans at the holiest and most cherished moments of their lives by trying to give them a helping hand as much as possible.

Congratulations to our country for having such a promising institution the bears the name of Al-Hussein and for being run by sincere Hashemites who are well-known for their humanity. My appreciation also goes to the efforts of volunteers and donors.

The young man has left our world. He was definitely relaxed having felt the touch of love from various sides, namely the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and all those who sincerely work hard to make it flourish.
O young man, May the Lord bless you. Relax in the highest and most sacred spot in the Kingdom of God. Praise all those who contributed to attaining your last mundane dream of visiting the Baptism Site… the site from where Saint Elijah, your con-citizen, ascended to the Kingdom of God on a chariot of fire.
