"Laudato si"… five years later

In 2015, Pope Francis published an important document titled, "Laudato si", which deals with caring for the environment in its capacity as the common home of humanity. The world viewed this document with appreciation since it was the first official document signed by the Pontiff dealing with the beauty of nature and its relevant issues. Several conferences and initiatives were held on "Laudato si" which is the title taken from St. Francis' prayers for creatures in the 12th century. The Catholic Center for Studies and Media in Jordan organized at the time a conference that introduced the document during which several environmental committees and societies in our beloved country took part.

These days, the Vatican begins a year-long marking of the document in a world whose major pollution has become the Corona virus, which made the entire world more united than ever in the endeavor to eradicate this pandemic and restore normal life.

Actually, the document had warned that environmental pollution and climate change, especially impurity of water, would influence the dissemination of diseases. Furthermore, maintaining a safe environment would lead to the manufacture of medicines and vaccines that effectively fight diseases and epidemics.

We recall the elapse of five years since the launching of the document, and reiterate the need to read it, as it is in the first place a document signed by a Christian spiritual head, yet it calls for harmony among religions within the framework of the call to preserve the Earth. It is God's creation and it is "our sister that cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life."

It is nice to recite a prayer for both Earth and humanity. This prayer was drafted to mark the 5th anniversary of 'Laudato si' which includes a supplication for the sickened Earth, due to human violations, and for humanity inflicted nowadays with the corona pandemic:

"O Lord, help us show creative solidarity in addressing the consequences of this global pandemic.
"Make us courageous to embrace the changes that are needed in search of the common good.
"Now more than ever may we feel that we are all interconnected and inter-dependent.
"Enable us to listen and respond to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor.
"May the present sufferings be the birth pangs of a more fraternal and sustainable world."
