Na'our… a miniature of Jordan

By Fr. Dr. Rif'at Bader

Christian clergymen (priests) in our country, and in all the churches of the world, are frequently asked to move from one region to another in order to perform their religious mission. That is why priests are sometimes referred to as the military personnel who are always ready to serve wherever their superiors want.

Over the past 25 years of priesthood, I moved from Zarqa to Madaba, then to Karak where I served as a priest in Smakiyeh township and as a director of the Latin Patriarchate School in Al-Wasiah area. Furthermore, I was transferred to Jabal Hussein, then to Na'our where I served for six years. It is the time now to proceed to the parishioners of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Tla' Al-'Ali.

Na'our impressed me. The parishioners formed one of the first churches in southern Amman as it was founded by the Latin Patriarchate since 1924. The current church was built in 1956 with the support of the Aleppo family of Ma'marbashi. Later, the Rosary Sisters came to serve in the field of education following the construction of the Latin School in the township.

Na'our is like the extended Jordan with regards to having Christians and Muslims living side-by-side, as they jointly work for the prosperity of Jordan. The Circassian citizens enjoy their full rights. At school graduation ceremonies, Circassian dances are presented which show Circassian dresses and music as a sign of respect for this major component of society.

Six years ago, with my moving to Na'our to complete the service of my brotherly priests, the forcibly-displaced brethren Iraqis were coming to Jordan. So, some of them were hosted in the church hall with the support of Caritas Jordan, while the Nishama of Na'our Association delivered almost daily aid. The UAE Red Crescent provided the Iraqi brethren with rented homes, while Caritas Jordan opened special schools for Syrian students, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and a number of donors.

Five years ago, Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto was launched in Na'our which was later added to the religious touristic sites that can be visited by Jordanians. This grotto was consequently added to the sites visited by friendly delegations arriving in Jordan from various countries of the world. The bishop of Our Lady of Lourdes in France had welcomed an invitation to visit Na'our , where he arrived leading a French media delegation.

In this constantly expanding Jordanian township, you find cohesion and cooperation with the official authorities, including the municipality and the security authorities, especially during religious holidays. During Christmas celebrations, a tree was lit annually in Na'our in cooperation with Khalil Salim Charity Society and called "The Tree of National Unity". The tree constituted an ineffable treasure owned by Jordanians which they seek to maintain intact, namely the dear national unity.

Thanks to Na'our and its good people.
