Patriarch Michel Sabbah: “The man of hope in a difficult time”

By Fr. Rif’at Bader

At the entrance of the World Council of Churches, there are photos of 12 international figures that sowed the seed of hope in difficult environments. One of these photos was of Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabbah, the former Latin patriarch who retired in 2008. He has spiritual and humanitarian views which call for disseminating love and forgiveness. He was also firm in demanding the attainment of the just rights of the Palestinian people and of every people seeking peace and freedom.

His photo was added to the international figures based on what he is quoted on the placard. He said: "We are human beings who worship God. Because we believe in the existence of God, we must be the men and women of hope, since the power of God is the one that will drive the universe to shores of safety and peace."
