Pope Francis receives invitation to visit UAE

Pope Francis received on Tuesday, June 5, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Abdullah delivered to Pope Francis a letter from Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed, which deals with UAE-Vatican relations and means to bolster them. The letter also included an invitation for Pope Francis to visit the UAE.

Pope Francis and Sheikh Abdullah then exchanged views on a number of regional developments, as well as issues on the regional and international stage that are of mutual concern.

Sheikh Abdullah expressed the UAE’s appreciation for Pope Francis’s peace efforts, and hailed the brotherly relations between the Pope and Grand Imam of Al Azhar Dr. Ahmad Mohammad Al Tayyeb. He said that the Pope and the imam of Al Azhar are great role models and symbols for tolerance and peace in our modern world.

For his part, Pope Francis welcomed Sheikh Abdullah’s visit, and praised the UAE’s efforts to promote and spread tolerance, bolster dialogue and coexistence between peoples. He also hailed the UAE’s humanitarian initiatives that alleviate the suffering of needy people around the world, regardless of their religion, race and ethnicity.
