ACO condemns insults aimed at Christian faith

Amman-en.abouna.org

The Association of Christians of the Orient (ACO) in Jordan has noted that an academic of one of the prestigious Jordanian universities sought to deal a blow to the national unity that binds Jordanian Muslims and Christians by posting videos of his lectures on social networking sites titled, "Comparative Religions".

A relevant statement issued by the ACO, a copy of which was delivered to en.abouna.org site, said that the style adopted by the academic reflected a cynical and a humiliating attitude towards the Holy Bible, which billions of people in the world believe in, including a segment of the population in this country. It added that this academic had to adopt a neutral position and focus on what associates the monotheistic religions whose aim is attaining the prosperity of humanity as well as ensuring harmony and cordiality among people.

Following is text of the statement:

"An academic in one of Jordan's prestigious universities has sought to deal a blow to the national unity that binds Jordanian Muslims and Christians by posting videos of his lectures on social networking sites of lectures titled, "Comparative Religions" which he ought name "Abuse of Religions". This attitude could sow the seeds of sedition among the children of this homeland who have been living together for thousands of years.

”The style adopted by this academic reflected a cynical, humiliating and a despicable attitude towards the Holy Bible, which billions of people in the world believe in, including a segment of the population of this country. It added that this academic had to adopt a neutral position regarding the beliefs of the followers of religions as well as focus on what associates the monotheistic religions with regards to attaining the prosperity of humanity in addition to ensuring harmony and cordiality among people.

"The classification of the others and of their beliefs in ready-made and stereotyped forms without prior knowledge and awareness of facts relevant to the beliefs of others distorts their image, violates their privacy and beliefs. It, furthermore, attempts to undermine the relationship binding the Muslims and Christians of this dear homeland.

"The principle of respect and peace, as associated with pluralism and which falls within the framework of respect for the Constitution and laws, is an invitation to maintain communication and integration so as to live together as citizens loyal to their homeland and its components within the process of moving ahead hand-in-hand in the homeland. The openness towards the others also implies openness towards oneself through positive interaction.

"The blessed Hashemite custodianship of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in our holy land, especially in Jerusalem--which is the focus of attention of His Majesty the King, may God keep him--is a custodianship of the land with all its components including the people. This very land, which can accommodate all people, has been distorted by this academic who focused on whatever causes sedition rather than on whatever brings together the components of this homeland.

"The ACO condemns and denounces what this academic has done. We demand that he issue a sincere apology to the Muslims and Christians of this homeland who have been afflicted by his deed. We also demand that due measures be undertaken towards him in the institution where he works, whose platform was exploited to spread the spirit of sedition and make sarcastic remarks relevant to the beliefs of others, so that this institution will remain a flourishing educational one that graduates educated generations capable of maintaining the unity of the homeland. We also demand that the concerned authorities take appropriate steps and measures against those who posted these insults so as to preserve the fabric of national unity."
