The Catholic Churches in the Kingdom celebrated on Friday, June 16, the annual pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Mount, in Anjara Township of Ajloun Governorate, which is considered one of the major Christian pilgrimage sites in the Kingdom since the year 2000, knowing that pilgrimage to this site started in 1990.

Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop William Shomali, who led the event, welcomed the bishops, priests, nuns and believers who arrived from various churches in the Kingdom to pay respects to Virgin Mary hoping that this will be a source of blessing to the families.

Bishop Shomali pointed out the importance of this shrine being frequented by believers every year in June seeking intercession, as well as performing prayers for peace and love among people. He also thanked parish priest Fr. Hugo Al Anis, as well as priests, nuns of the Incarnate Word, and the parishioners who have been serving at this holy shrine for ten years.

For his part, Director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media in Jordan Fr. Rif'at Bader pointed out that the shrine was launched by late Fr. Yousef Ne'mat, who was one of the priests of the Latin Patriarchate, in honor of Virgin Mary where this is based on old traditions which state that Lord Jesus Christ and His Mother had crossed the hills of Gilead, east of the Jordan Valley.

Fr. Bader added that the shrine is considered one of the major sites for Jordanian religious tourism. He also reiterated, in this regard, the call for convening a national conference for religious tourism in order to mass efforts designed to promote it in a modern and advanced way.

Prior to celebrating the Holy Mass, Bishop William Shomali met with Governor of Ajloun Dr. Falah Al Swailmin and a number of governorate officials. The meeting was attended by Bishop Maroun Lahham; representative of the Apostolic Nunciature Monsignor Roberto Kona; Monsignor Khaled Akasheh, from the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue; Patriarchal Vicar of the Greek Catholic Church Archimandrite Bassam Sahatit, and a number of ambassadors of friendly countries.

The pilgrimage ceremony included prayers to maintain peace and security under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ben Al Hussein. Prayers also called for the restoration of peace in several countries including the Arab ones. The Mass was followed by hymns of Fr. Fady Tabet of Lebanon.
