Catholic Churches in Jordan marked on Friday, January 12 the 18th Christian and national pilgrimage day to the Baptism Site which is located on the eastern bank of the River Jordan. This tradition has been followed since 2000 which marks pilgrimage to the most prominent Christian religious site in Jordan.

During a press conference held prior to the ceremony which was organized by the Catholic Center for Studies and Media (CCSM), Most Rev. Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, highly valued the pioneering role played by Jordan in maintaining common living among its citizens. He also thanked His Majesty King Abdullah II Ben Al Hussein for supporting the Christians in Jordan and Palestine and for his role in the Holy City.

The Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate also expressed appreciation for the efforts exerted by His Majesty the King for the Holy City, according to which Jerusalem became the most outstanding issue in the region in the past days. He also reiterated that the Church views Jerusalem as a mother for all and that it cannot be confined to one people. He also stressed the importance of having the Israelis and the Palestinians reach agreement on the future of Jerusalem through negotiations.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab conveyed the greetings of Prime Minister Dr. Hani Mulki to the Catholic Churches on their annual pilgrimage to the Baptism site. She stressed that Jordan is a holy country and that this is a reminder to the world that the roots of Christianity will remain deep-rooted in the Orient.

Annab conveyed a message from the Baptism Site which states: "We, as Muslims and Christians. are an integral part of the fabric of the homeland. Our civilization and history always dictate that we disseminate our culture to the entire world because Jordan's strength lies in its genuine culture as well as its Islamic and Christian components.

Then, Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Pizzaballa and concelebrated by Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop William Shomali, Bishop Yasser Ayyash, and heads of the Catholic Churches. Over 6,000 people took part in the Mass in the presence of Arab and foreign ambassadors. As hymns were sung, Archbishop Pizzaballa sprinkled holy water on believers.

In his homily, Bishop Yasser Ayyash said that the churches of the region have officially begun celebrating the Baptism of Lord Jesus Christ in the Jordan River since the 5th century. He explained the religious rites practised in this feast indicating that sprinkling the believers with holy water implies purification and blessings.

Prayers were said asking the almighty God to entrench stability, peace and security in Jordan. Prayers also called for protecting His Majesty King Abdullah Ben Al Hussein so that he would have the potential to pursue his diplomatic wisdom particularly with regards to Jerusalem inhis capacity as the custodian of the Christian and Islamic sanctities in the city.
At the end of the Mass, the secretary general of the Latin Patriarchate thanked all those who contributed and attended the ceremony including the Jordanian people led by His Majesty King Abdullah, Chief of the Board of Trustees of the Baptism Site His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi Ben Mohammad, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab and all the ministry employees, the Jordan Tourism Board, Director of the Baptism Site Dr. Suleiman Al Farjat and his deputy Engineer Rustom Makajian.

Thanks were also conveyed to the governor of Balqa, members of the Lower House of Parliament, the security apparatuses, members of the diplomatic corps in Jordan particularly to the ambassadors of Italy, Belgium, First Counselor for the Apostolic Nunciature in Amman Monsignor Mauro Lalli, as well the local, Arab, international and Church media outlets.
