Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary celebrated in Zababdeh

By Filippo De Grazia/ lpj.org

On Sunday, October 7, 2018, at the Church of the Visitation in Zababdeh, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was celebrated, and during which the Sisters of the Rosary renewed their vows.

The feast is very popular and deeply felt in this area, characterized by the presence of the Rosary Sisters founded by Saint Marie Alphonsine and, an equally important detail, the fact that it is here in the Holy Land that the mysteries of the Holy Rosary took place.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem was represented by His Excellency, Bishop Boulos Marcuzzo, Vicar of Jerusalem and Palestine, who welcomed the kind invitation of the parish priest of the Church of the Visitation of Zababdeh, Fr. Ibrahim Nino.

Zababdeh represents a very significant parish, with a substantial number of parishioners. The population of the city is slightly more than three thousand inhabitants, of which about two-thirds are Christians, the majority being Latin Catholics.

The Mass was the occasion for the Rosary Sisters, led by their superior, Sister Alexandrina, to renew their vows During the homily, Bishop Marcuzzo touched on several points of great importance and timely relevance. At first, in deference to the feast that was being celebrated, he insisted on the vital role played by the Rosary, especially in the family. Therefore, he focused on the things currently affecting and involving the Church, especially the Youth Synod, a discussion afterwards deepened by the Patriarchal Vicar with the young people themselves at the end of the celebration; and finally, he launched the march of families, a theme to which the Patriarchate has dedicated the entire pastoral year. On the occasion of the “march of families,” which will officially be inaugurated at the Mass of Our Lady of Palestine in Rafat at the end of the month. Each parish will set apart families in ten, fifteen, twenty groups, who are invited to follow a text summarizing all fifteen themes addressed in Amoris Laetitia: relations between spouses, the relationship between spouses and children, relations with the world, problems connected to education, influence of the mass media on young people, etc., will be dealt with in fifteen meetings. In these meetings, families will gather to read the Bible together, to discuss and discuss what to do to improve.

At the end of the Mass, good wishes and warm greetings were expressed to the Sisters by the town’s people. After the celebration, Bishop Marcuzzo held a brief meeting with those in charge of young people who wanted to meet with the Vicar of Palestine precisely to discuss the issues that the Synod of Bishops is facing in Rome in these days. A brief video interview with Bishop Marcuzzo followed which is intended to reach all the young people of the area, who will meet today in Zababdeh to enlighten themselves on what the Synod is telling him up to now, and what could be done. Young Christians will be present, coming not only from Zababdeh but also from Jenin, from its Arab-American University and other parishes of the region.

Following this meeting, Bishop Marcuzzo took advantage of the opportunity to be shown by the parish priest Fr. Ibrahim Nino the initiatives he has promoted and is promoting in his parish.

First, there was the visit to the so-called “Grotto of saints,” where images and authentic relics of the most significant saints were collected for the people of Zababdeh: Saint Marie Alphonsine, Saint Mariam of Jesus Crucified, Saint Charbel Makhlouf and Mother Teresa. Notably, people spontaneously come to pray in this cave.

Then the visit continued instead in the cave that is under the rectory, a grotto which, until recently, we did not know of its existence and that only people of a certain age knew of its presence. In this cave the so-called “Legacy of the people” of Zababdeh, consisting of ancient objects that recall past times; here people found a haven in times of danger and difficulty since the time of Turkish domination. Precious, therefore, was the initiative of the parish priest to bring to light this evocative place, which today houses the historical legacy of the people of Zababdeh.

The parish priest concluded the visit by showing Bishop Marcuzzo the corridors of the school and the rectory furnished with an exciting photographic exhibition depicting the most significant images of the history of the parish.
