A Jordanian delegation has participated in the "Religions for Peace 10th World Assembly", which is considered one of the largest international organization that involves heads of religions in the world. The gathering convened in Lindau/ Germany from 20-23 August 2019 under the theme “Caring for Our Common Future--Advancing Shared Well-being”.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier opened the conference in Lindau/ Bavaria with the participation of 900 people from 140 countries. The Jordanian delegation included Director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media (CCSM) in Jordan Fr. Dr. Rif’at Bader, sociologist Dr. Fadia Ibrahim, specialist in religious media Dr. Marcel Jwainat, and researcher at Al Nahda Center for Studies and Intellectual Development Abdullah Jbour.

At the opening session of the conference, which focused on the youths’ views in peacemaking, the German president called on religious leaders to take part in the elimination of conflicts. He added that religions, in their capacity as being influential and powerful with regards to peace, can play an indispensable service to human beings. He continued that misuses and exploitation of both faith and religion constitute basic motives of non-religious intentions and political goals.

The five-day conference discussed five major issues on the role of religion in peacemaking, namely caring for our common future; advancing shared well-being; preventing and transforming violent conflicts; promoting just and harmonious societies, sustainable and integral human development; and protecting the Earth.

The participants in the conference included Secretary General of Religions Without Borders William Findley. A new secretary general was elected namely, Azzah Karam from Egypt. Honorary presidents were also elected including former bishop of the Lutheran Church in Jerusalem emeritus Bishop Munib Younan. Other participants included religious leaders from Germany, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople of the Eastern Orthodox Church Bartholomew I, Egyptian Minister of Emigration Nabila Makram, and High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Miguel Ángel Moratinos who inaugurated a memorial symbolizing peace among the peoples of the world which was called “the Ring of Peace”.

For his turn, Fr. Rif’at Bader said during session in which the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, Ela Gandhi, was also involved. Fr. Bader said that “the world has often experienced nonviolence which led to positive effects in various parts of the world. But in the first two decades of the 21st century, we noticed many young people joyfully joining terrorist, extremist, and violent organizations. We, consequently, have to work together to let youngsters adopt a policy of non-violence, but we must ‘devise educational methods’ to show the beauty of non-violence and to encourage young people to follow this path altogether.”

In the final declaration, the conferees called for advancing reconciliation as a vital dimension of positive peace within persons and among communities and nations as per the Peace Charter for Forgiveness and Reconciliation; and forging an alliance of virtue based on a declaration of virtues widely shared across religious traditions and other virtue heritages.

They also regretted the misuse of religion especially for being distorted to fuel violence and hatred. This context is based on religious traditions and respect for differences between religions and multiple religious traditions. They also stressed that religions call on humans to share the responsibility of protecting one another in various walks of life, pointing out the commitment to enhance positive peace in its capacity as a general interest and acknowledging religious traditions that foster public acts of forgiveness and reconciliation.

The participants also stressed that they would advance reconciliation as a vital dimension of positive Peace within persons and among communities and nations; work for the well-being of refugees and migrants and develop programs of accompaniment and support; urge religious communities to invest their resources in alignment with achieving sustainable development goals; raise public awareness about deforestation and taking action against climate change ; in addition to commitment to being full-partners to support the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
