Naour: Bishop Brouwet celebrates solemn Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes grotto

Bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes in southwestern France Monsignor Nicolas Brouwet has culminated his historic visit to Jordan by presiding at a solemn Mass and a candle-lit tour before Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in Naour, southwestern Amman, which was attended by a large number of believers from various parts of Jordan.

The Mass, celebrated on Friday, September 21, was concelebrated by Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop William Shomali, Patriarch Fouad Twal, Bishop Salim Sayegh, and First Counselor for the Apostolic Nunciature in Amman Monsignor Mauro Lalli. The Mass was also attended by priests and deacons from Latin, Melkite, Maronite, Chaldean churches as well as nuns from various congregations. In attendance were public and diplomatic personalities as well. Hymns were sung by the Fountain of Love Choir led by maestro Tu'meh Jbara.

Prior to the solemn Mass, parish priest of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Fr. Rif’at Bader welcomed Bishop Brouwet and all those in attendance.

In his homily, Bishop Brouwet pointed out the importance of contemplating the face of Virgin Mary and the joy She felt when meeting with Elizabeth. He said: "This urges us to reflect on the visit of Virgin Mary to the hearts of Christians. She accompanies us in our Christian life and knocks on the gates of our hearts to give us joy. There is something of extreme importance in the Lourdes apparitions. When Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette she did not reveal her name, because she wanted to urge Bernadette to get to know her more deeply without relying on superficial or stereotypical images."

Bishop Brouwet continued: "Bernadette was afraid of the apparition. She tried to make the sign of the Cross but she could not do that. Yet, after Virgin Mary Herself made the sign of the Cross, Bernadette was able to do so, as if She was telling Bernadette: ‘Fear not, Christ is present in our midst. I was sent by the Holy Trinity.’ Thus, Bernadette experienced an atmosphere of faith. Virgin Mary always leads us to Christ, and makes our way to the Kingdom of God. Virgin Mary paves the way for us to the Lord, as if She also says that She is not always the focus of our attention, for She said in Cana of the Galilee: ‘Do whatever He tells you to do’. "

Bishop Brouwet went on to say: "The second thing that Virgin Mary did during the apparition is that She did not speak and remained silent while smiling. Sometimes silence between two people is more expressive than talking. It indicates profound trust and the need to fill the void. There are some words that really lead to a start in relationship, but there is silence that respects the steps leading to the others. Virgin Mary respected this silent step towards Bernadette, and just made a smile. Imagine this smile. It expressed a lot of confidence. The smile was the open door that paved the way for a new relationship. When we smile everything becomes possible, and it becomes a sign of mental and emotional openness. When Virgin Mary smiled, She revealed life in the Kingdom of God and the life of grace towards God.”

Bishop Brouwet concluded his homily by saying: "The third thing is that Virgin Mary spoke to Bernadette gently saying: ‘Could you come to me for 15 days?’ At this point, Virgin Mary asks Bernadette to visit Her as if She is asking for a present. This is a sign of Virgin Mary’s concern, humility and respect for Bernadette. This poor and sick young girl was illiterate, and was not familiar with Christian education. Despite her weakness, Virgin Mary showed respect for her and viewed her as a very important person. This is Virgin Mary’s view to every one of us because it is God's loving and infinite look to every one of us.” Bishop Brouwet pointed out that Virgin Mary “makes us always grow in Christ, leads us to the real spring, and shows us the way to permanent communion with the Church, in order to go together, accompanied by Virgin Mary, to Jesus Christ."

At the end of the Mass, a candle-lit tour took place with masses of believers singing Marian hymns during which Bishop Brouwet along with vicars and priests professed blessings marking the conclusion of the grand holy Mass.
