Naour: Solemn Mass celebrated in the presence of 'Our Lady of Fátima'

Naour-en.abouna.org

The second day of the arrival of the statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima in Jordan, the Land of Baptism, was marked on Friday, May 31, by celebrating a solemn Mass at the square of the Rosary Sisters Monastery in Naour, southwest Amman, which coincided with the end of the Marian month.

The solemn religious ceremony was celebrated by Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop William Shomali and concelebrated by Apostolic Nuncio to Jordan and Iraq Archbishop Alberto Ortega Martin, First Counselor for the Apostolic Nunciature in Amman Monsignor Mauro Lalli, Vice-rector of Our Lady of Fatima Grotto in Portugal Fr. Vítor Coutinho, parish priest and Director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media in Jordan Fr. Dr. Rif’at Bader, and a number of priests from various churches.

On behalf of Naour parishioners, Fr. Simon Hijazin welcomed the delegation accompanying the statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima in addition to German Ambassador to Amman Ms. Birgitta Siefker-Eberle , MP Qais Ziadin. He said that the visit of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima is a great event as it signifies rallying around or mother, Virgin Mary to pray.

In his homily, Bishop Shomali said: "We have come to celebrate in the presence of the statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima in Jordan, and we know that it is a symbol that refers to reality. It is a tangible sign that refers to a concrete reality. Through this statue, our mother, the Virgin Mary, visits us to convey a message. Whenever the apparition of Virgin Mary was seen either in Lourdes, in Fatima or elsewhere in the world, She always gave a clear message to her children. If we sum up the role of Virgin Mary in salvation and in our lives, we have to admit that She was first and foremost a mother who visited the shepherds in Portugal as a mother and conveyed to them a message in her capacity as a mother for the entire mankind.”

Addressing the message conveyed by Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima, Bishop Shomali said, “When the Virgin appeared in Portugal in 1917, the world was engulfed in the First World War, which claimed the lives of some 20 million people. She did not turn a blind eye to the fighting taking place among Her Children, so She appeared in Fatima to convey a message indicating that the wars are the outcome of sin, pride, greed and hatred. She also indicated that the war would soon come to an end, which was the case a year later. She also indicated that another ferocious and violent war would erupt, whereby after few years the Second World War broke out whose victims exceeded those of the First World war.”

Bishop Shomali continued, "The Virgin Mary revealed in her apparitions the terrible scene of hell. She told the young shepherds: ‘The souls of those who do not repent would be sent there.’ Virgin Mary also gave a secret which was later revealed. This secret tells of a man in white walking towards the Cross on a hill and walks past the bodies of many martyrs during which persons try to kill him and his clothes get stained with blood. Pope John Paul II later understood this prophecy which came true on May 13, 1981 when someone tried to shoot him. The Pope said he felt that an invisible hand tried to keep the bullet away from his body to protect him from death. After his recovery, the Pope went to Virgin Mary grotto to thank Her for protecting him from an imminent death. The bullet was in his hand and he presented it to the grotto as it was placed in the crown the Holy Rosary of Fátima.”

Concluding his homily, Bishop Shomali said, "The message of Fatima remains unchanged. It is a message of repentance since most of our suffering is caused by our sins and the sins of others. If the world does not repent then the pain will increase. It is a message of prayer, as what Virgin Mary asks for is what Her Son calls for. The message of Lord Jesus Christ is embodied in the verses in the Holy Bible which reads: ‘Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, and serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality’.’’

Later, Fr. Vítor Coutinho addressed the believers by pointing out that Virgin Mary said in her first apparition in Fatima that she was coming from Heaven. Therefore, Fatima refers to an encounter between Earth and Heaven, and that we, as Christians, we walk on this Earth, but our eyes are always focused towards Heaven.” He stressed that God never leaves humans for despite wars and hatred and that Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima represents the Biblical reality to humankind.

He quoted Pope Benedict XVI that in prayer we can change the course of mankind since the real human progress implies the change that takes place in the heart of humans. He pointed out that in Her apparitions Virgin Mary called for praying everyday including prying the rosary since prayer changes history because it changes the human heart.

Father Victor concluded saying: "We learn from Saint Jacinta Marto to share the suffering of humanity. She was compassionate to humans and wished to alleviate their suffering." While Saint Francesco teaches us genuine friendship with the Almighty God by seeking to leave everything in order to adhere to Christ."

Later, the believers proceeded with lit the candles towards Our Lady of Lourdes grotto while the Fountain of Love Choir presented Marian hymns. The choir, led by Maestro Tu’meh Jbara, also presented a hymn titled, “Salve Regina”.
