Our Lady of Fatima delegation from Portugal concludes visit to Jordan

A delegation from the Portuguese city of Fatima, led by vice-rector of Our Lady of Fatima grotto in Portugal Fr. Vítor Coutinho, has paid a four-day visit to Jordan organized by the Catholic Center for Studies and Media in Jordan.

The delegation visited Mount Nebo, Madaba churches and celebrated a solemn Mass in Na'our. Mayor of Na'our Zayed Al-Sawa'ir welcomed the visiting delegation saying, "Na'our reflects the bright Jordanian image of common living between Muslims and Christians. Since the launching of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, Na'our has become a destination for guests who visit Jordan, their second country.''

After presenting Fr. Vítor Coutinho with a shield, the mayor noted that the color blue symbolizes the springs which characterize Na'our, the green color symbolizes the advanced agriculture, while the Jordanian flag overshadows this city which symbolizes the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The Nashama and Nishmiyat Association of Na'our welcomed the visiting delegation and presented a shield on behalf of the people of Na'our and of all the associations functioning there.

For his turn, Fr. V Coutinho thanked the mayor for this warm welcome and said that Fatima is a famous Christian pilgrimage site in Portugal and it is considered one of the largest pilgrimage sites worldwide. He added that the Marian grotto welcomes the faithful affiliated with various religions since Virgin Mary, revered in the Holy Gospel and the Koran, brings together Christians and non-Christians in Her capacity as the mother that b gathers all those who love Her.

The delegation, supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities as well as the Jordanian Tourism board, visited a number of churches and cities in the Kingdom, where religious ceremonies were held in the company of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima. The delegation, accompanied by Director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media in Jordan Fr. Dr. Rif'at Bader and Fr. Simon Hijazin, visited St Charbel's Maronite Catholic Church where prayers were held. The delegation's visit included Our Lady of Peace Center which included a meeting with Christian youth in the presence of Fr. Marwan Hassan.

In Na'our, a solemn Mass was celebrated by Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop William Shomali and concelebrated by Apostolic Nuncio to Jordan and Iraq Archbishop Alberto Ortega Martin in the presence of German Ambassador in Amman Ms. Birgitta Siefker-Eberle, MP Qais Ziadin and a large number of believers from various parts of the country. The Fountain of Love Choir led by Maestro To'mah Jbara took part in the celebrations.

The delegation visited the Church of Our Lady of the Mount in Anjara, which is one of the most important sites of the Christian pilgrimage in Jordan. The delegation also celebrated a Mass at the Greek Catholic Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Jabal Amman in the company of the Latin Church of St. Joseph parishioners and in the presence of MP Abdullah Zraiqat, as well as another Mass in the Latin Church of Al-Misdar in a festive atmosphere with the participation of a delegation of American university students studying Arabic.

On the last day of the visit, the delegation visited the Latin Vicariate in Amman and met with Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop William Shomali. A Mass was celebrated by Fr. Jihad Shwaihat and Fr. Tony Hraimat at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church in Sweifieh, western Amman, in the presence of hundreds of parishioners from various parts of the capital. Furthermore, the delegation visited the school and the church of Franciscan Sisters in Amman. The last visit of the delegation was in Karak which included a meeting with large masses of people in the Latin Patriarchate School of Al-Wasiyeh in the presence of heads of Catholic and Greek Catholic churches during which a Holy Mass was celebrated by Fr. Yousef Rizq.

At the end of the visit, Fr. Dr. Rif'at Bader expressed his gratitude to the Jordanian authorities which facilitated the visit, as this visit will definitely reflect positively on religious tourism in our beloved country. This necessitates undertaking trips and organizing mutual visits by delegations so to be familiarized with historical, religious and social values and consequently promote Jordan in the Western countries in a positive way that results in increasing the number of visitors and pilgrims to our holy places.
