The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Naour, south of Amman, participated in the centenary celebrations marking the apparitions of Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal which culminated in massive celebrations presided over by Latin Patriarchal Vicar of Jordan Bishop William Shomali. The celebrations started with praying the rosary which was followed by a Mass, and concluded in a tour of Our Lady of Lourdes grotto.

Parish priest Fr. Rifat Bader welcomed the believers in the church which was built 60 years ago. He also welcomed Galilee parishioners who were accompanied by Sister Flavia Oweis as well as Patriarchal Vicar of Jordan Bishop William Shomali on his first visit to the church and the grotto, priests, Rosary and Silesian nuns, in addition to a large number of people from various parts of the Kingdom.

In his homily, Bishop Shomali referred to the historical events that accompanied the Marian apparitions in 1917, namely the last year of World War I (1914-1918) which led to the death of millions of people, forced displacements, poverty and hunger. He added that the apparitions to children were intended to convey an important message to humanity calling for penance.

The Latin Patriarchal Vicar continued that Virgin Mary asks the world to resort to penance so as to avoid evil and sins which cause suffering and wars. He asserted the need to pray the rosary in its capacity as the effective weapon against evil. He also called for dedicating the first Saturday of every month for confessions, for taking the Communion, and for dedicating this day to the sacred Heart of Mary.

The believers lit candles and proceeded towards the statue of Virgin Mary of Fatima. It is the grotto launched two years ago in Naour which takes that name the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto, which is regarded in addition to Fatima's, the most frequented grottoes which dedicate the apparitions of Virgin Mary, officially recognized by the Church.

The Mass was concelebrated by parish priest Fr. Rifat Bader, Fr. Ibrahim Naffa' and Catholic Syrian parish priest Fr. Zuhair Kiki.
