Patriarch Sabbah: The Feast of the Annunciation is feast of the universe

Patraich Michel Sabbah

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 2020

On March 25, Nazareth is in feast. The Feast of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel announced the Virgin Mary that she would conceive with the power of the Holy Spirit and give birth to a son, Jesus, which means the "Savior" (cf. Luke 1: 26…). The Apostle John, in the beginning of his Gospel, told us who Jesus is, the Word of God: "In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God and the Word was God. Through him all things came into being; not one thing came into being except through him… The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from the Father as only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:1-3.14).

In Nazareth it is a day of feast. It is also a feast for the universe. There is not only pandemic and disease in the universe, there is also feast and Redemption and there is God, holy, almighty and loving all His creation. There are also we, human beings, still struggling with our power, weakness, and our science. With our science and prayer, we will triumph. We can reach our own human perfection and the perfection of our Earth.

In this feast of the Annunciation in Nazareth, God has looked down on our Earth. He sent to us His eternal Word, who became Man like us, to save us, and make all of us saviors of ourselves and of our humanity. He saved us and made us able to be saved, as He created us, and made us able to be.

He created us in His image and likeness. We can be good as He is, strong, as He is, and able to triumph over the epidemic, which we are facing on these days. With our faith, with our prayer and our science, we will defeat it and all disease.
The Feast of the Annunciation is feast of the universe, because God has become "God with us", as said the Prophet: “the virgin is with child and will give birth to a son whom they will call Immanuel, a name which means 'God-is-with-us' (Matthew 1: 23; Isaiah 7: 14). “God with us”, on our Earth, as said the Prophet and the Gospel. Therefore man, if one wishes, can save oneself and can transform the Earth back into the paradise, lost because of his sin. One is able to remove more than the disease that kills the body; one is able to remove every disease in the soul, every violation of God's commandments, every human oppression and injustice.

With the Feast of the Annunciation in Nazareth, the universe is in feast, each of us is in feast, because God is with us, because we are able to be good, strong, and able to love as God loves.

We are in a time of fasting, and a time of pandemic. For all, for those who pray, for the scientists, in a particular way, it is a time of struggle, in order to triumph over it.

In the time of Prophet Isaiah the people were also in distress, and they were fasting. They raised their prayer to God and said: 'Why have we fasted, if you do not see, why mortify ourselves if you never notice?' (Is 58: 3). They thought their traditions and their mortifying themselves will save them.

God said, by his Prophet Isaiah: “Is that the sort of fast that pleases me, a day when a person inflicts pain on himself? (Is 58: 5) God does not want man to torture oneself. Rather, He wants one to do good and perfect oneself with love, which is the perfection of law and prophets. God said: “The sort of fast that pleases me is sharing your food with the hungry, and sheltering the homeless poor: if you see someone without cloth to clothe him"? 8Then your light will blaze out like the dawn and your wound be quickly healed over. Saving justice will go ahead of you and God's glory come behind you. 9Then you will cry for help and God will answer; you will call and he will say, 'I am here” (Is 58: 7-9).

The time of fasting is a time of repentance, and the greatest repentance accepted by God is our love to our brothers and sisters, because, simply, they are the children of God. You want to please God? Love God's creation, your neighbor as yourself. The time of fasting is the time when we recover our ability to love. The time of the epidemic is the time in which we live our love for all God’s creation. We all are in distress; however, we have to care for others’ distress as well. They are children of God; therefore they are our brothers and sisters.

Originally, why do we fast and repent? In order to come nearer to God, to make the Earth and all that is in it a path to God, in order to remove from our Earth all that is an obstacle between us and God Almighty, so that we can be able to make our life a walk with God, as it was with the first man in the book of Genesis (Genesis 3:7-10). The easiest way to “purify” our Earth is to love our neighbor.
