Jerusalem: Christian leaders inspect progress of work at Church of Holy Sepulcher

ocpsociety.org and en.abouna.org :

Patriarch Theophilus of Jerusalem, and other Christians leaders from Armenian Orthodox, and Catholic Churches inspected the renovation works and maintenance of the floor of the Rotunda around the Sacred Edicule on June 16, 2022. The work is being carried out by the University Sapientia of Rome.

The renovation project will extend unto 26 months and will cost €11,000.,000. This is the second phase of the work that is being carried out. The first phase consisted of the successful renovation of the Edicule, which was completed by the National University of Athens.

The Christian communities that have shared their holiest site for centuries are embarking on a large-scale project to restore the ancient stone floor of the Jerusalem basilica.

The project includes an excavation that could shed light on the rich history of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in the Old City, built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, died and rose again, the central event of the faith celebrated every spring on Easter.

Custos of the Holy Land Fr. Francesco Patton  had earlier said, "This marks a further improvement of ties among the Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic churches. The cooperation among the three communities is the most important thing. It shows to the entire world that it is possible among Christians of different churches and communities to have a fraternal relationship.”
