Jordan: Patriarch Pizzaballa inaugurates house for the care of priests

By Munir Bayouk/ en.abouna.org :

On Sunday, September 19, 2021,  Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem His Beatitude Pierbattista Pizzaballa presided at a Holy Mass  celebrated at St. Mary of Nazareth Church in Sweifieh, western Amman,  after which he inaugurated St. Anton Al-Badwani House for the Care of Elderly and Sick Priests, located next to the Latin Patriarchal Vicariate in Sweifieh, Amman.

The Holy Mass was concelebrated by Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop William Shomali, Bishop Salim Sayegh, Chargé d'Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in Jordan Bishop Mauro Lalli, parish priest Fr. Anton Hreimat. In attendance were a number of priests and large number of the faithful.

At the outset of the Holy Mass, Fr. Hreimat welcomed Patriarch Pizzaballa and noted that the inauguration of  St. Anton Al-Badwani House for the Care of Elderly Priests is the fruit of the contributions of St. Mary of Nazareth Church parishioners, and it is a token of love, gratitude, and appreciation for the efforts of the venerable priests. He also paid tribute to the parishioners who contributed to this project.

In his homily Patriarch Pizzaballa said "every person in this world seeks to hold the best position as this is human nature. This is what happened with the disciples. Lord Jesus Christ was talking about his crucifixion, while the disciples were occupied with positions, implying a difference in mentality and standards." He stressed the need for Christians, despite their human and affiliation with the world, to belong to crucified Lord Jesus Christ.

Touching on the inauguration of the St. Anton Al-Badwani House for the Care of the Elderly and Sick Priests, he pointed out that priests serve people all years of their lives, but one day they need care, and here comes the role of the parishioners to reciprocate the service. His Beatitude Patriarch Pizzaballa thanked Fr. Anton Hriemat and the parishioners of St. Mary of Nazareth Church in Sweifieh, who took upon themselves the responsibility for the fulfillment of this project which is a matter worthy praise.

Fr. Hanna Kildani, who will be staying in St. Anton Al-Badwani House, referred to the message of Pope Francis on Thursday, September 16, 2021, that "'old age is not a disease but rather a privilege.' Thus, His Holiness overturns all human reasoning, believing that the elderly are a burden and that they must be eliminated. The Pontiff added: 'A community that takes care of the sick is one that is “well-rooted in Jesus'."

Fr. Kildani indicated that Fr. Hreimat and the parishioners of St. Mary of Nazareth Church had fulfilled the dream of Pope Francis. He expressed thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Latin Patriarchate clergy and concluded his address by saying: "We thank you, we love you, and may the Lord bless you."

He also presented Fr. Anton Hreimat with a Russian icon inlaid with silver.
