Heads of the Council of Churches in Jordan issued the following statement on Tuesday, October 27, in reaction to attempts to disparage Islam and the consequent regrettable events that took place in France:

We heads of churches in Jordan--the country of the Interfaith Harmony Document launched by His Majesty King Abdullah II Ben Al Hussein at the United Nations General Assembly in 2011 so that the countries of the world would adopt it and accordingly mark it by celebrating the World Interfaith Harmony Week--closely follow the regrettable events that took place in France due to tarnishing Islamic religious symbols and the successive reactions which  led to murdering the French teacher, and the subsequent reactions.

We consequently condemn all attempts to disparage religions as well as all acts of violence in our capacity as brethren who worship One God and share the same homeland. We also affirm that all religions call for tolerance, love, harmony, respect for others, and abstinence from insulting the others' religious belief. We also affirm our support for the culture of dialogue, for building trust, and for unveiling common virtues.

We ask the children of our homeland, who have been viewed by the entire world as a model of Islamic-Christian harmony, to continue to emulate the model followed by our parents and our grandfathers as well as this authentic Jordanian heritage that preserves the unity of the social fabric so that Jordan would remain strong, dear, and sublime as well as kept at bay from intrigues at a time when we live on the land of divine messages and common living. We also stress commitment to our national unity under the leadership of His Majesty King Abudullah II Ben Al-Hussein.
