Bethlehem University has had the privilege of welcoming His Eminence Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, archbishop of Marseille and president of the French Bishops’ Conference, during his visit to the Holy Land.
The cardinal, who has been in Palestine for several days, described Bethlehem University as his first important stop. “The first thing to do is to come, see, and listen. Bethlehem University is the only Catholic university in Palestine, and it is our responsibility to support its mission of serving the youth and the wider community,” he stated.
The delegation was welcomed by Br. Hernán Santos, FSC, Vice Chancellor, who emphasized the strong and long-standing connections between Bethlehem University and France through the Lasallian tradition. He noted the University’s commitment to offering opportunities for Palestinian students despite the challenges of restrictions, economic hardship, and limited mobility.
Br. Jack Curran, FSC, Vice President for Advancement, pointed to the significance of international recognition and academic collaboration, especially through the partnership with ECAM University in Lyon, which will provide opportunities for student and faculty exchanges.
Prof. Iman Sacca, Vice President for Academics, stressed the importance of developing further academic ties with France, while Dr. Fadi Kattan the Executive vice president spoke of the urgent need to create opportunities for Palestinian youth, who often face financial and social obstacles in accessing higher education.
Faculty and staff also shared their experiences from the Boat Project, an initiative inspired by Pope Francis, which brings together youth from across the Mediterranean to foster peace and intercultural understanding. Participants described it as an experience of “love in action,” “homecoming,” and a living example of unity across cultures and faiths.
Cardinal Aveline’s visit reflects the commitment of the French Catholic Church to supporting Christian communities in Palestine and to fostering peace and dialogue across the Mediterranean.
