caritas.org :

Caritas Internationalis joins hands with Pope Francis and extends its condolences and support to the victims of the devastating earthquake that has struck Morocco.

“Having learned with sorrow of the earthquake that violently struck Morocco, Pope Francis expresses his communion in prayer in the face of this natural disaster,” read the telegram of condolences sent through Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

Caritas Internationalis is working to provide immediate relief and support to those affected by this tragedy. Our organization is in continuous communication with Caritas Morocco, and we are actively collaborating with Caritas Middle East and other Caritas Members worldwide. Together, we are dedicated to conducting assessments and coordinating a comprehensive response in the hours and days ahead.

As we stand united in our prayers for the victims and their families, Caritas Internationalis reaffirms its commitment to alleviating the suffering caused by this devastating earthquake. Our mission is to extend a helping hand to those in need and to embody the message of love, compassion, and solidarity that Pope Francis exemplifies.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8, represents a seismic event of unprecedented proportions in Morocco, with the country’s National Institute of Geophysics noting that such an occurrence has not been recorded in over a century.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports a staggering toll of at least 1,037 lives lost and over 670 individuals injured, with more than 200 in critical condition. Regrettably, subsequent media reports suggest that the death toll could exceed 2,000, highlighting the urgent need for assistance and support.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, many families have been forced to spend sleepless nights outdoors, fearing the possibility of aftershocks. Reports have emerged of entire villages reduced to rubble, with residents trapped beneath the debris.
