Bethlehem University has signed a partnership agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to promote democratic values and enhance youth engagement in Palestinian society.
This collaboration is part of the Support to Democratization and Inclusive Electoral Processes in the State of Palestine project, implemented by UNDP. The initiative aims to empower Palestinian youth to take active roles in shaping their communities through meaningful civic engagement.
The agreement focuses on establishing Debate Clubs at Bethlehem University and its partner institutions, namely Birzeit University, An-Najah National University, and Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie. These clubs will serve as platforms for students to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and informed debate skills.
Rev. Dr. Iyad Twal, executive vice president of Bethlehem University, emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of dialogue and intellectual diversity on campus. He highlighted the university’s dedication to providing extracurricular opportunities that prepare students to face real-world challenges with confidence and competence.
Ms. Chitose Noguchi, deputy special representative of UNDP, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Palestinian institutions and youth. She noted that this initiative will help cultivate a generation of active citizens and future leaders capable of driving positive change in their communities.
Representatives from partner universities, including Dr. Yahya Istaitih of Kadoorie, Mr. Eyad Al-Aqra of An-Najah, and Mr. Fadel Khaldi of Birzeit, underscored the value of inter-university cooperation. They highlighted how these clubs will promote open dialogue, encourage students to engage with critical societal issues, and foster mutual respect for diverse perspectives.
