Holy Land: Restoration and renovation of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Aboud

lpj.org :

On Friday, April 4, 2025, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, presided at the redidcated the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in the town of Aboud, following the completion of its restoration and renovation works.

Built in 1912, the church is considered one of the most historic religious landmarks in the town.

The restoration project included the renovation of the church’s walls, electrical system, and lighting, aiming to enhance the spiritual and contemplative atmosphere. A new front entrance was added, designed also as a space for children. In addition, some facilities were upgraded to ensure the comfort of both visitors and parishoners.

On this occasion, His Beatitude blessed the newly restored church and expressed his joy at the successful completion of the project. In his address to the parish, he said:

“The Church is a home for all and a refuge for every wounded heart. Every family needs a home, and here we remember our brothers and sisters in Gaza who have lost their homes—finding in the Church a shelter and a haven. The Church is not only made of stones, but of the faithful, and above all, of Christ Himself present among us. Renewing the church building is also a renewal of the community, for the Church breathes through the life and faith of her people". He concluded by congratulating Fr. Remon Haddad, parish priest of Aboud, for his dedicated leadership throughout the renovation project, and extended his heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed with their hard work.

In a word of thanks, Fr. Remon Haddad expressed his deep gratitude to all who contributed or volunteered in the project, whether through physical work or financial support:

“We thank the Latin Patriarchate, the benefactors, parishioners, and the youth of the town who embodied the true meaning of a living Church—not just a building of stones, but a living body united in love. With God's help and your support, we have witnessed this great achievement.”

Following the blessing, Fr. Remon, together with the Cardinal, led the Way of the Cross prayer with the participation of the parishioners. The celebration concluded with expressions of congratulations and warm fellowship in the parish hall.
