L’Œuvre d’Orient runs several projects in Iraq

oeuvre-orient.com and en.abouna.org :

L’Œuvre d’Orient is running several projects in the plain of Nineveh to allow Christians to rebuild their homes and re-settle.  Some of these projects include:

– Re-building of the school run by the Dominican sisters in Qaraqosh, the largest Christian city in Ira,

– Reconstruction of the cultural centre in Bartella, which was destroyed by Daesh and by bombing, and

– Renovation of the Saint Joseph cultural centre at Karamless, built on the site of a former 13th century monastery. Once restored, the centre will be used for local festivities, weddings and burials, training courses, and it will feature a children’s and adult’s library, plus a family café.

In Baghdad, l’Œuvre d’Orient supports the renovation of the Saint Joseph of the Carmelites school. This school received displaced people for over two years after Daesh entered Mosul. The aim is to restore the school to its original function – high-level education and training for young Iraqis of all faiths. The project runs in parallel with the inauguration of a Carmelite Saint Joseph religious community. The work started a few months ago with support from the John Paul II Foundation.

In Mosul, help rebuilding the Al Bisharaet Syriac Catholic church and construction of a house for the caretaker and a presbytery for the priest.

It is worthy to note that L'Œuvre d'Orient works in four areas, namely education as more than 400 institutions currently enjoy support from l’Œuvre d’Orient to enable underprivileged children to attend school, to rebuild buildings, to purchase teaching equipment, and to pay educators and teachers. It also supports French-language teaching, which promotes unity in these diverse countries. It furthermore functions in healthcare and social aid by caring for three million sick people in clinics, hospitals, and homes for elderly or disabled people.

Its activities also include community action by providing support to train priests, monks, and nuns, as well as to enable them and their congregations to pursue their everyday work providing assistance to the local community.

In the field of culture and heritage, L’Œuvre d’Orient strives to preserve the heritage of Eastern Christians by protecting it locally and raising awareness of it in France. It is also testament to the roots and legitimacy of Christian presence in Eastern societies.
