In celebration of the Blessed Feast of Pentecost, the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) held a press conference to launch its new TV and Radio Stations. It will serve as an Ecumenical platform bringing together the various Church Families in the region, and a humanitarian voice speaking in the name of truth, dignity, and justice.
The conference took place on Monday, June 9, 2025, live from the "Platform of the Word" at the offices of the MECC General Secretariat in Beirut, with an online participation of Father Rif'at Bader, the director of the Catholic Center for Studies and Media and Publisher of Abouna websites, and Delegate of the MECC Executive Committee for the Media Affairs, Dr. Jean Salmanian, Member of the MECC Executive Committee, as well as the MECC General Secretariat team.
The conference, which was broadcasted live on the MECC Facebook page, began with the Lebanese National Anthem, followed by a speech by the conference's host, Dr. Laure Abi Khalil, the Coordinator of the "Dialogue, Social Cohesion and Human Dignity" program at MECC. She noted that "our meeting today at this Holy time, the Feast of Pentecost, is an affirmation of the spirit of unity and renewal that the Church instills in people's hearts. Today's Pentecost is a Pentecost of the media, which needs a new spirit to carry it to a broader horizon of social and spiritual responsibility."
Then, there was a speech delivered by the Journalist Lea Adel Maamary, the Media Officer, Coordinator of the Church and Media Relations, and the Director of the Platform of the Word at MECC. She mentioned that “the role of Christian media amidst dangers and surprises is to give its people strength. It can illuminate, overcome obstacles and barriers, and is responsible for this accumulated legacy and for the reality of today’s Church, alive with its youth. Its responsibility goes beyond conveying the event to contributing to its creation, working to improve it, and fortifying it so that it befits its image and splendor. It also highlights humanitarian and societal issues with a comprehensive Ecumenical spirit whose first and ultimate goal is humanity.”
Afterwards, Father Rifaat Bader delivered an online word in which he said: "the media is the light from which the Church sends its message. This message has two complementary aspects. The first is the proclamation of the Gospel and the proclamation of Christian values in today's world, and this is the Church's right... However, the second aspect, complementary to this first aspect, is the aspect of dialogue between the various sister Churches, especially in this year, which marks 1,700 years since the Council of Nicaea and the declaration of the Common Faith that the Churches recite together. As well as through the fraternity that exists between Church Families, which is the most appropriate term used by our dear offices, "Church Families."
At the end, the MECC Secretary General Professor Michel Abs delivered a speech in which he said: "As a social researcher, before being an Ecumenical official, I consider that concealing knowledge, through withholding information, constitutes an implicit crime, and may sometimes be an actual crime, if it leads to harm or damage. Hence, the responsibility of imparting and disseminating knowledge, for the common good, constitutes a human, national, and religious duty... Disseminating knowledge and promoting good patterns of thought and behavior in society is one of the Church's primary tasks, because knowledge is the light that the Lord has commanded us to walk with as long as we have it. We must walk with it lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. Knowledge is light and truth."
Moreover, the conference featured spots and videos about Pentecost and the launch of the TV and Radio Stations, produced by the Media of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC).
