MECC issues statement concerning the events occurring northern Syria

mecc.org :

The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) is observing with deep concern the events unfolding in the north of the Syrian Arab Republic, especially in the Aleppo region, as if the Middle East is destined never to find the path to peace or stability, which hinders its progress and development.

The MECC is concerned about the people—their dignity, their security, their safety, the continuity of their normal lives, the provision of their basic needs, and ensuring that they are not exposed to anything that may negatively affect their lives and the future of their generations.

We ask the Lord to grant the people the strength to have patience and to hold on to their land, their homes, and their institutions, to remain in their communities and try to continue their daily lives as much as possible. We also hope that public and private institutions will be allowed to continue their work with whatever capabilities are available to them, out of kindness for the people who watch local developments with concern.

What matters to the MECC at this stage, in addition to the continuity of life, is the preservation of civil peace and social cohesion to avoid any undesirable consequences should the opposite occur, God forbid.

Similarly, the Council addresses those concerned with public affairs and decision-makers at both local and international levels, asking them to exert pressure to protect civilians and prevent harm to them, in accordance with the provisions of international humanitarian law, so that they do not become fuel in the political conflicts raging on the regional stage.

The MECC, as a regional faith-based entity, also addresses regional and global religious institutions, asking them to intervene with influential authorities around the world to protect civilians and prevent harm to them. We also urge them to provide necessary assistance to those affected by the events.

We pray to the Almighty Lord to inspire everyone with the right path and wisdom in handling complex matters, and to remind all those working in public affairs that love, which implies positivity in interactions, and dialogue are the most effective means to resolve all kinds of differences or conflicts among people.
