A photograph exhibition titled, “Christianity in Jordan, Heritage, History, and Culture" opened in Amman on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses Princess Wijdan Al-Hashemi and Princess Rajwa Bint Ali at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts.
The exhibition of 107-photos of different sizes explores the emergence of the Catholic Church in Jordan. It was attended by Minister of Culture Haifa Najjar, ambassadors to Jordan, and Christian clergymen.
The exhibition to last until September 28, 2024 includes photos on the emergence of the Catholic Church in various parts in Jordan in the period 1860-1960. The exhibition, organized by the Friends of Jordan Festivals, coincides with the silver jubilee of His Majesty King Abdullah’s Ascension to the Throne, the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies, and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of relations between Jordan and the Holy See.
The exhibition, organized by Fr. Jean-Michel de Tarragon, includes a collection of photos documents that shed light on the roots of the Latin Churches in Jordan where some of these photos date back to more than 150 years as they were obtained mainly from the historical archives of the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem, and other private archives. It also provides a review of the architectural beauty, pastoral and agricultural life, as well as the cultural heritage in Jordan.
On the sidelines of the exhibition, a photographic book by photographer Linda Khoury was launched which contains a collection of archival and modern photos of the various Christian denominations in Jordan. The book serves as a vital document of Jordan’s religious and historical heritage.
Furthermore, Fr. Jean-Michel de Tarragon presented a briefing on the start of the plan to launch the exhibition in cooperation with the French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research in Jerusalem (École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jerusalem).
