On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, deputizing for His Majesty King Abdullah II His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi Ibn Muhammad, Chief Adviser to His Majesty for Religious and Cultural Affairs and Personal Envoy, paid an inspection visit to Our Lady of the Mount Monastery and the Children’s Home (Mary the Virgin, Mother of Hope) in Anjara, Ajloun, to oversee ongoing maintenance and restoration efforts.
During the visit, Prince Ghazi praised the efforts of those managing the church and other relevant institutions, noting that these initiatives aim to improve services and create a safe environment for children and visitors.
On the other hand, Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop Iyad Twal highlighted the significance of the Royal support for the site and reaffirmed His Majesty's commitment to rehabilitating and maintaining Christian pilgrimage destinations and churches.
It is of prime importance to note that the maintenance work at the monastery has been carried out under Royal patronage and funded by a grant from His Majesty the King, which reflects the ongoing support for Christian pilgrimage sites across Jordan.
Our Lady of the Mount in Anjara is quite an outstanding site of religious pilgrimage in Jordan, where Lord Jesus Christ, Blessed Mary, and the disciples passed through Anjara on their journey between the Sea of Galilee and Jerusalem, and rested in the area in a nearby cave. For many years, the cave has been a holy place for pilgrims and was commemorated with the modern shrine, the “Church of Our Lady of the Mount.” The cave has also been one of the most prominent Christian pilgrimage sites in the Kingdom, attracting thousands of pilgrims from around the world.
Jordan is considered one of the major gems in the world with regards to religious tourism, as it contains numerous Christian sites that are worthy to visit on pilgrimage trips as they exude the aroma of holiness and beauty. Among these sites which need to be included on Christian pilgrimage trips are the Baptism Site on the eastern side of the River Jordan, which is the site where Lord Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist; Umm Qais, a town in northern Jordan near the site of the ancient town of Gadara where Lord Jesus Christ performed the miracle of the Gadarene Swine; and Mount Nebo which is very significant because of its role in the Old Testament because according to the Old Testament Prophet Moses saw the Promised Land, among others.
The visit of His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi to Our Lady of the Mount Monastery provides cogent evidence of the noble Royal attention aimed at introducing the world to Christian sites in Jordan. It is hoped that Royal Hashemite sublime endeavors in this regard will promote religious tourism under the leadership of His Majesty the King, and with the efforts exerted by His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi Ibn Muhammad, who has earlier led the process of developing the Baptism Site.
