UAE: Message of Bishop Paolo Martinelli for the Holy Week 2026

avosa.org :

Dear Faithful of the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia,

We begin a very special time of our liturgical year, the Holy Week. In the coming days, we will celebrate the great mysteries of our faith, the roots of our hope, starting with Palm Sunday and ending with the Holy Triduum that culminates in the celebration of Christ's Resurrection. I invite you to participate in these liturgies with spirit of love and devotion.

This year, we approach the Holy Week in an unfortunate situation. Since 28th February, the whole of Middle East has been caught into a complex and unprecedented conflict. We thank our Rulers, civil authorities and defence personals, who have constantly strived to keep us safe and continue with normal life including keeping our churches open and regular celebration of the Holy Mass. We respect and follow the guidance given by the local authorities even during the Holy Week.

The current situation may have invited for some changes in the way we celebrate the Holy Week. I invite you to patiently accept the inevitable inconveniences you may face and adapt to the adjustments in the schedule of celebrations, as per the situation of each parish.

Let us live all the difficulties of this time in union with Christ, as a sign of our participation in His sufferings for the Redemption. May his victory over evil and death spread throughout the world to shun the noise of war and bring the joy of peace and reconciliation.

I renew my appeal to stand united in prayer and fraternal solidarity. Pray the Holy Rosary every day in the family, offering it for peace in our region and in the world.

May the celebrations of the Holy Week, lead us to the profound joy of Easter, where we will welcome once again, the radiant greeting of the risen Christ: Peace be with you!

May the Lord give you His Holy Blessing.

+ Paolo Martinelli, OFM Cap
