Amman: Bishop Twal celebrates Holy Mass consecrating Christ the King Church following renovation work

By Munir Bayouk/ en.abouna.org :

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop Iyad Twal celebrated Holy Mass at Christ the King Church in Misdar, downtown Amman, marking the completion of the renovation work. The celebration was concelebrated by parish priest Fr. Suleiman Shobash, Fr. Fares Siriani,  in addition to deacons Piero Zarnikian and Jubran Salameh, in the presence of Rosary sisters, and a large number of parishioners.

The renovation work follows  the elapse of 20 years since the latest renovation of the church, following the appearance of  cracks  in its ceiling. The work was conducted without affecting the church's original character, as it served to highlight the church's identity by inlaying its walls and columns including the original historical colors which preserve its authenticity.

In his homily, Bishop Twal expressed his happiness for taking part with the parishioners of Christ the King Church in the Sunday Holy Mass and sharing their joy  following the completion of the renovation work. He also extended his greetings and appreciation to everyone who contributed to the project.

He said that the church, in our Christian faith, is built on two  foundations, namely material represented by the building, and the Christian community itself or rather the living church. He recalled a recent conversation he had with the Melkite Catholic Patriarch, who noted that despite the absence of the Christian community in some villages, there was an insistence on rebuilding  churches to remain a center that enables the Christian community to rise and live again.

Bishop Twal  stressed that "the living church is the one that builds the physical church," noting that the building is merely a means of providing assistance to the Christian life. He pointed out that the first Christian community used to perform  prayers even before the construction of churches, noting that what makes any church a house of grace is Lord Jesus Christ’s presence in the Holy Eucharist, and the Holy Spirit that enlivens the believing community.

He touched on two main issues, namely how live as an active Christian community as well as the issue of humility and love as mentioned in Sunday Holy Bible of  Luke 14 1, 7-14). On humility he said  that the Christians’ identity stems from God's grace in one’s life, and from the Holy Spirit received on the day of baptism which contrasts with today's world, which focuses so much on appearances. On love, he pointed out that true humility leads to love since humility means discovering Lord Jesus Christ's presence in one’s life for when a Christian discovers the grace of Christ in one’s life and the grace of Christ in the lives of others, one lives the life of the Christian community and lives the living Church. In this case, priority is given to Christ, who is the center of the life of the community.

Bishop Twal concluded his  homily by noting that life is not easy, as it requires prayer, dedication, and a living faith. He encouraged the faithful to discover the blessing of Christ's presence in their lives, a blessing that reflects  goodness on the entire Christian community. He hoped that the Church would remain alive by the grace of Christ, by the presence of the faithful, and by the Holy Spirit that fills their homes, so that all of them would become small and living churches.

On the other hand, Fr. Shobash reviewed the steps that led to the renovation of the church which started in 2007, and thanked the Latin Patriarchate, represented by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Bishop Iyad Twal for their support of the project. He also thanked the parishioners for their support and contributions.
