Under the patronage of His Excellency Bishop Dr. Iyad Twal, Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan, the Friends of Bethlehem University in Jordan hosted a distinguished reception on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Signia by Hilton, Amman. The evening marked the official launch of the Friends and Alumni of Bethlehem University in Jordan (FABU-JO), bringing together alumni, supporters, and institutional partners for an evening of connection and collaboration.
The event was graciously hosted by Mr. Anton Kattan and Mr. George Nasra, lifelong supporters of Bethlehem University, helping fuel the University’s mission of educational excellence and hope in Palestine.
It welcomed a diverse audience that included educators, diplomats, business professionals, and representatives of Jordanian institutions. The gathering aimed to deepen ties between Bethlehem University and the Jordanian community, celebrate the impact of BU alumni in Jordan, and share the university’s ongoing story of education and resilience.
The evening opened with a welcome address by Mr. Anton Kattan, who expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the evening. “The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has always been at the forefront in supporting Palestinian rights. Jordan is a main gateway for Palestine and there are strong family and economic ties between Jordan and Palestine.” Kattan Said.
He added “As Friends and Alumni of the university in Jordan, we hope to familiarise people with the work of the university and contribute to strengthening its ties with the community and with academic and research institutions.”
H.E. Bishop Twal then delivered a keynote address in which he underscored the transformative role of education in shaping just and peaceful societies. He shared his appreciation for being part of the special evening dedicated to Bethlehem University and affirmed his enduring support for the institution.
“What makes Bethlehem University stand out is that it is an oasis of peace and justice operating in a very complex environment – politically, socially, and culturally. Your presence here tonight is not only a source of moral support for Bethlehem students, but also for youth across Palestine. The University welcomes Palestinian students from all regions and religious backgrounds.”
Bishop Twal previously served as Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Bethlehem University and later as Executive Vice President from 2020 until the end of 2024. In February 2025, he was ordained Bishop and Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan.
Following that, Br. Hernán Santos, FSC, Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University, spoke about the university’s identity and mission rooted in the Lasallian tradition, stating that “Bethlehem University was founded on Lasallian values that view education as a tool for human liberation and social justice. We are committed to offering a learning environment that blends academic excellence with cultural and spiritual openness. When a room in Amman fills with people asking about students they’ve never met, it tells us one thing: we are not alone in this mission. Hope travels, and tonight it arrived with strength and grace.”
In his address, Mr. George Nasra voiced pride in supporting the University saying that “Bethlehem University has always been a symbol of hope and perseverance. We believe its alumni have the power to make a difference in their communities – both in Palestine and Jordan. We will continue to expand BU’s reach and promote academic collaboration between Jordanian universities and Bethlehem University.”
Dr. Grace Elias, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, spoke about the University’s strategic plan to elevate academic performance in light of global shifts – especially the rise of technology and artificial intelligence.
“Bethlehem University has started to translate its strategic plan into concrete initiatives, the most notable of which is the launch of the Academic Innovation Hub at the University. This Hub plays a pivotal role in fostering excellence in education.
It operates on three levels: first, by enhancing faculty capacity through continuous training and specialized workshops; second, by improving the learning environment through innovative technologies and modern teaching methodologies; and third, by creating collaborative and creative spaces across disciplines. The Hub also leads the development and modernization of curricula to meet global standards and evolving market needs.”
The evening also featured networking sessions where alumni and friends of the university discussed ideas to amplify BU’s mission in Jordan, expand its alumni network, and explore opportunities for collaboration with Jordanian institutions – enhancing prospects for both current students and graduates.
