The CCSM… ‘an association between civic education and religions’

By Munir Bayouk/ en.abouna.org :

As has been the case all the time, the Catholic Center for Studies and Media  (CCSM) in Jordan, directed by Fr. Dr. Rif'at Bader, leaves no stone unturned in its quest to shed light on current affairs designed to help introduce novel issues that help shove societies into an era of enlightenment, while cementing peace and common living.

On September 22, 2025, the CCSM held a conference on "Civic Education and Religion" titled, "Building a Culture of Citizenship and Social Peace" at the Amman Inter.Continental Hotel",  which was held in cooperation with the Jordanian Center for Civic Education and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. It aimed to initiate an engagement among civic education, digital dialogue, and the role of religions in enhancing a culture of societal peace to help open the doors wide while realizing the importance of the role played  by civic education in fostering the values of active citizenship and social responsibility.

This conference introduced a novel idea represented by associating civil education with religions to serve as a means indicative that such a nexus would help safeguard societies and forestall any prospects for any kind of social instability. This kind relationship serves as a cornerstone for building societies characterized by coherence, while resorting to high-level enlightenment that sets firm bases for peaceful societies. With religions serving as a divine message to create healthy societies, then sound civic education consolidates this message through sound teachings that elevate humans to the level of nobility.

At the opening session, CCSM Director Fr. Dr. Rif'at Bader stressed that "there is no contradiction between civic education and religious education, as both complement each other," and noted that "religious education does not nullify civic education, as civic education supports religious education by constantly directing students towards altruism, a mindset of tolerance, and a culture of encounter."

On the other hand, Director of the Jordanian Center for Civic Education Ms. Mona Al-'Alami stressed that civic education simply teaches our children to be active citizens who know their rights and duties, as well as to participate to bring about changes by not remaining spectators. When we integrate civic education with religious values, and the spirit of citizenship we thus create a more just and peaceful society. She said, "Let us be peacemakers, be penchant towards peace, while transforming the ideas reflected on this day into thoughtful initiatives and practical steps that leave a real impact on our communities and provide an inspiration to future generations."

Furthermore, Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Azmi Mahafzah emphasized that what we aspire to is to have a generation who believes that citizenship is not a slogan but rather a practice; that religion is not merely rites but a system of moral values reflected in behavior; and that diversity is not a threat but rather a source of strength. He said, "We aspire to have a generation that will continue to consolidate Jordan's civilizational message when we make education a path for peace, unity, and construction",

The conference concluded by an address delivered by  Fr.  Firas Nasrawin, director general of the Latin Patriarchate Schools in Jordan, who reviewed the role played by the Catholic Schools in Jordan and their contribution to introducing high-level education. Stating that the schools affiliated with the Catholic Church dot the Kingdom from north to south, he stressed that these schools will continue to provide needed services at all times to promote the standard of education for our dear students by disseminating the spirit of brotherhood, cordiality, and common living.

The CCSM,  which has all the times been renowned for expeditiously keeping the Christians well apprised of any event at the local, regional, Arab, or global levels through its Arabic and English language websites has organized over the past years several conferences or taken part in others, consequently obtained a foothold in the Christian media at the local and global levels.
