On Monday, August 14, 2023, on the occasion of the Feast of the Assumption, in the garden of Gethsemane, the vigil of the Solemnity of the Assumption was held along with a procession with the statue of the sleeping virgin Mary, from the Cenacle to the church of Gethsemane.

And today, Tuesday, August 15, 2023, while Fr. Francesco Patton, the Custos of the Holy Land, presided over a mass in Gethsemane Church; A celebratory mass was also held at the Dormition Abbey Benedictine Church in Jerusalem. The celebration coincided with the reopening of the church after the completion of the restoration work.

“The Virgin Mary has a special connection to the Holy Trinity: She is the daughter of the Father, the mother of the Son, and the bride of the Holy Spirit,” said Abbot Nikodemus C. Schnabel, OSB, abbot of the Dormition, who presided over the Mass, along with other bishops and priest in the presence of many believers. “Today we celebrate the love of God, which has overcome death. We celebrate our common hope of the resurrection, where the Virgin Mother watched over us, intercedes for us, and awaits the day where she welcomes each one of us into the Kingdom of her Son, Jesus Christ”.
