Bethlehem University is honored to share that Brother Hernán Santos González, FSC, PhD, Vice Chancellor of the University, participated in a special assembly convened by HisHoliness PopeLeo XIV to address the worsening crises in Gaza, Ukraine, and the broader Middle East.
In his powerful remarks, Pope Leo issued a renewed appeal for peace and denounced the dangerous spread of rearmament and false propaganda:
“How can we continue to betray the hopes of entire peoples through the false rhetoric of rearmament?” the Pope asked. “Rearmament, itself a betrayal, is born of propaganda that distorts the truth.”
He continued with heartfelt concern for the Christian East:
“My heart bleeds when I think of Ukraine, and of the tragic, inhuman situation in Gaza and the Middle East. All justifications for war must be rigorously examined, especially as the law of the strongest is replacing the force of international and humanitarian law. People must not die because of fake news.”
Brother Hernán’s participation reflects Bethlehem University’s unwavering commitment to justice, peace, and the Church’s mission in the Holy Land. As the only Catholic university in Palestine, Bethlehem University serves as a beacon of hope and truth in a region too often overwhelmed by conflict and misinformation.
“To stand with the Holy Father in this moment of reflection and resolve was both a responsibility and a grace,” said Brother Hernán. “At Bethlehem University, we believe education is the most powerful antidote to despair. Our students, thanks to the generosity of our benefactors, are being formed to become voices for peace and agents of healing.”
Bethlehem University expresses deep gratitude to all those who support its sacred mission of providing transformative education to the young women and men of the Holy Land.
