By Munir Bayouk/ en.abouna.org :

On Saturday, October 4, the Latin Vicariate in Jordan held its first-of-its-kind administrative and spiritual meeting for its employees who work in the Ecclesiastical Court, school administrations, finance office, Our Lady of Peace Center, the Catholic Center for Studies and Media, the Family Office, and the General Secretariat for the Youth. The meeting was held at Our Lady of Peace Center titled, "The Family of the Patriarchal Vicariate: Jointly in Mission and Service Together."

At the outset of the meeting a Holy Mass was celebrated at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Then, Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop Iyad Twal, delivered a lecture addressing four main themes, namely spirituality, loyalty and affiliation to the Church, professionalism, and quality assurance.

Regarding spirituality, Bishop Twal noted that Christian spirituality in the workplace is not merely a religious practice, but rather an ethical and a humanitarian approach that consolidates the relationships among colleagues and enhances the quality of professional life. He pointed out that work in church-affiliated institutions conveys a dimension that transcends materialily leading to adherence to the values and principles aspired from faith, which creates a work environment characterized by respect, honesty, and appreciation.

Regarding loyalty and affiliation to the Church, Bishop Twal underlined the importance of faith in the Church's message and mission. He noted that genuine belonging is embodied in love, commitment, and faithfulness in service. He quoted a survey at the Latin Patriarchate, which showed that loyalty is linked to moral and spiritual factors, most notably is faith in Lord Jesus Christ and love for the Church, harmony among colleagues, as well as mutual appreciation and support.

Referring to professionalism, Bishop Twal said that working in Church institutions is both a spiritual and practical responsibility, noting that the Church operates in influential fields such as education, media, and social services, which requires enhanced performance and adherence to professional values. He also touched on several key issues, most notably enhancing employees' satisfaction through ensuring justice and job security, developing talents, instilling a professional mindset based on spiritual and practical values, and keeping pace with global development in institutional work.

On quality assurance, Bishop Twal indicated that quality is not merely a matter of monitoring performance, but rather a proactive process aimed at preventing failures before they occur by going through periodic auditing, proactive action, and formal documentation of all procedures to ensure transparency and accountability.

Concluding his lecture, Bishop Twal called for working together in a coherent spirit to serve the Church and society, saying, "By working hand-in-hand, we are building a work environment that not only inspires, but rather makes a genuine difference. Every contribution on your part marks a spark of change, and every idea is a brick in the edifice of excellence that we build together in the spirit of love and service to which Lord Jesus Christ has called us."

In the second session, Dr. Muhannad Khoury, director of Finance and Administration Department at the vicariate, and Ms. Hanan Al-Deeb, director of Rehabilitation and Development at Our Lady of Peace Center, delivered two lectures that addressed the theological foundations of work and the concepts of quality assurance in light of the New Testament.

Dr. Khoury said that work as referred to in the Bible is an extension of the creative work of God, as He called on man from the earliest days to work and not to live in idleness, but rather to participate in the development of Earth. Pointing out that Lord Jesus Christ was Himself a carpenter, he quoted parables inspired by practical life, such as that relevant to the farmer, while highlighting the importance of professionalism and mastery of every job.

He stressed that the sanctity of work is not measured by the type of profession or its social status, but rather by the workers' sincerity in fulfilling their mission.  He quoted Lord Jesus Christ as saying, "I did not come to be served, but to serve," stating that it constitutes a call to fulfill God's mission on Earth by serving others for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

For her part, Ms. Al-Deeb addressed the concept of quality management in light of the New Testament. She highlighted the relationship between the teachings of the Gospel and the principles of comprehensive quality. She also quoted Lord Jesus Christ's words in John 10, where He portrays Himself as the "Good Shepherd," to indicate that servant leadership is the basis for achieving quality and excellence, as leaders are required to be at the service of their teams, by supporting and inspiring them.

She continued that the quality principles of ISO9001 are largely consistent with the teachings of Lord Jesus Christ as they share a common goal, namely achieving excellence in service and human development through perfection, integrity, teamwork, and caring for others.

The meeting concluded with a practical workshop attended by the employees of various departments during which the participants were trained on using "the Fishbone Diagram tool" within the framework of quality management, as a means of analyzing problems and identifying their root causes in an organized way, which leads to effective and sustainable solutions.
