On Friday, July 4, 2025, in an act of unity and solidarity, Msgr. William Shomali, General Vicar of the Latin Patriarchate, participated in the funeral Mass held at St. James Orthodox Church for the repose of the souls of the martyrs of St. Elias Church in Damascus, victims of a brutal attack that violated the sanctity of the place and the dignity of human life.
This participation reflects the unwavering commitment of the Church in the Holy Land to defend the Christian presence in the Middle East.
It also affirms the deep spiritual bond and the shared struggles of daily life among the faithful in the region, especially in light of the serious challenges facing Christians in Syria, which continue to threaten their very presence and peaceful coexistence with others.
In his address, Msgr. Shomali conveyed the deep sorrow of the Church over the loss of these brothers and sisters in faith. He emphasized that the blood of martyrs is never shed in vain; rather, it stands as a cry for truth in the face of injustice and a living testimony to the perseverance and steadfast faith of Christians amid tribulation.
The Mass, offered for the eternal rest of the martyrs, was not only a moment of mourning, but a powerful testimony to the unity among the Churches and a message of solidarity with all who suffer persecution. It proclaimed that the Mother Church of Jerusalem will never forget them, and that her voice will continue to be a voice of truth, prayer, and peace.
