Sister Inah as a young woman
The world’s oldest nun has now received the title of world’s oldest person at the age of 116.
Inah Canabarro Lucas was born on 8th June 1908, In Sao Francisco, Brazil.
Inah told the Guinness Book of Records that as a child, she was so small and thin that her parents doubted she would survive to adulthood. Aged 16, she began her faith journey, studying at Santa Teresa de Jesus boarding school, before moving to Uruguay, where she took her vows to become a nun.
In 1930 she returned to Brazil, becoming a teacher of Portuguese and mathematics at a school in Rio de Janeiro. Through her teaching, she was able to travel, before joining Provincial House in Porto Alegre in 1980.
She is the second-oldest nun on record. The oldest was Sister André, a French nun who died aged 118 in 2023.
