Amman: "Faith makes Christians more responsible towards their homelands", Patriarch Nona says

en.abouna.org :

Patriarch of the Chaldean Church His Beatitude Paul III Nona has affirmed that the Christian faith does not isolate believers from their societies and homelands; it rather urges them to assume greater responsibilities towards both of them, while stressing that true holiness is manifested through serving others, respecting human dignity, as well as  working for justice and peace.

He made these remarks during the Holy Mass he celebrated on Friday, 6 November 2026, at St. George’s Cathedral of the Melkite Greek Catholics in Um Al-Summaq, Amman, marking the beginning of his first pastoral visit to Jordan since his installation as patriarch of the Chaldean Church.

In his homily, Patriarch Nona expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome he had received, and thanked Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso, and Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan Bishop Iyad Twal for their care of members of the Chaldean Church. He also offered prayers for Jordan, its people, and its stability, recalling the victims of the recent terrorist attack in Karak Governorate.

In his homily, Patriarch Nona reflected on the meaning of holiness in Christian life, noting that the holiness of the Church does not rest on the perfection of its members, but rather on the presence of Lord Jesus Christ within it and His salvific work.

He said that holiness is not merely a matter of moral commitment or practice of religious rituals, but rather a living relationship with Lord Jesus Christ that is reflected in the believers’ conduct and relationships with others. He added that good deeds are not the source of holiness but rather its fruit, and called for embodying their faith in everyday life through cordiality, service, and a shouldering of responsibilities.

He reflected on the teachings of St. Ephrem and St. Isaac of Nineveh, noting that the Eastern spiritual tradition connects holiness with inner transformation, compassion, in addition to openness to the suffering and needs of others. He emphasized that liturgical life cannot be separated from people's realities, rather it should serve as a source of spiritual strength that inspires believers to bear witness to their faith within society.

As for the relations between Churches, Patriarch Nona called for enhancing humility, mutual respect, and dialogue, while preserving the distinctiveness spiritual and liturgical richness of every Churchs’ traditions.

He stressed that affiliation with the Church does not contravene belonging to one's homeland but rather enhances it, noting that the holiness inspires Christians to contribute to the common good, to defend human dignity, and to participate in building a society founded on justice and peace.

At the conclusion of his homily, he called on the faithful to make their lives a living testimony to the Gospel through cordiality, compassion, hope, honesty, and service to humanity. He emphasized that the world needs believers whose faith is evident in their attitudes and actions.

He concluded with a prayer pleading for the faithful to remain devoted to their Churches and homelands, and to work alongside all people of goodwill towards a future founded on justice, peace, and cordiality.
