On the third day of his visit to the Kingdom, namely Sunday January 12, Holy See Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Apostolic Nuncio to Jordan Bishop Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso, visited several religious sites in Jordan.
On the first leg of his visit, he visited St. George's Orthodox Church in Madaba where he was welcomed by parish pastor Fr. Yousef Hamarneh, the priests of the Latin parish, and a number of parishioners. He was acquainted with the Madaba Mosaic Map, located inside the church, which is the oldest pictorial map of the Holy Land that dates back to the second half of the sixth century AD. The map depicts the eastern Mediterranean region in the Byzantine era with the city of Jerusalem located at its center. It also shows several sites in Palestine, Jordan, and part of the neighboring countries, namely Egypt and southern Syria.
He also visited the Church and the Grotto of the Beheading of John the Baptist in Madaba where he was received by parish priest Fr. Tariq Abu Hanna, the assistant priests, nuns of the Little Annunciation Family, who supervise the parish of Saint James the Lesser in the town of Ma'in, the Rosary Sisters, the Brotherhood of Hope " that runs the "Beit Al-Liqa" Center for people with disabilities and parishioners.
Furthermore, he visited the parish museum which depicts the early beginnings of the Latin parish, and listened to a welcoming address by Fr. Abu Hanna in which he also gave a briefing of the various pastoral, spiritual and cultural activities in addition to another address by former member of Parliament Majdi Al-Ya'coub. He was apprised of Madaba ancient ruins. Then, he prayed the Our Father prayer with the parishioners, conveyed to them the heartfelt greetings of His Holiness Pope Francis, and gave them his blessing.
The last leg of his tour, included a visit to Madaba Governorate where he visited the grotto of Prophet Moses on Mount Nebo, and was welcomed upon arrival by Custos of the Holy Land Fr. Francesco Patton and the Franciscan priests who supervise the site. This site is one of the Christian pilgrimage sites in the Kingdom, which was visited by both Pope John Paul II in 2000 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
He also toured the church which was restored in 2016 and visited the remains of the rich in mosaics ancient basilica , which was mentioned by pilgrim Egeria since the 4th century AD. Then, Cardinal Parolin celebrated Holy Mass in the presence, of the Italian nuns working in the Kingdom.
