Msgr. Peter Vaccari, President of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association–Pontifical Mission, together with a distinguished delegation, visited Bethlehem University as part of a pastoral visit in solidarity with Christians in the Holy Land.
The delegation included Archbishop William E. Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore, Vice President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus; Sir Patrick E. Kelly, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus; Sir John A. Marrella, Supreme Secretary and General Counsel of the Knights of Columbus; His Excellency Michael J. La Civita, Lieutenant of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem- USA Eastern Lieutenancy and Director of Communications at CNEWA. The delegation also included representatives from the Pontifical Mission Jerusalem Office, led by Mr. Joseph Hazboun, Regional Director.
They were warmly welcomed by Brother Hernán Santos, FSC, Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University, and Brother Jack Curran, FSC, Vice President for Advancement, along with members of the Executive Council.
The delegation met with Bethlehem University students, who shared openly about the challenges they face during these difficult times, including the hardships endured by their families and the uncertainty about their future. Despite these struggles, students highlighted that education remains their greatest source of hope.
University leadership also briefed the delegation on the impact of movement restrictions, which continue to affect student enrollment and access to education. These restrictions, coupled with broader economic and social pressures, underscore the urgent need for solidarity and support.
Reflecting on the visit, Msgr. Vaccari stated, “From the very beginning, CNEWA and the Pontifical Mission have been linked to the history of Bethlehem University. It is a privilege for us to continue this mission and to serve on the International Board of Regents, supporting the University so it may continue to thrive.”
The visit was a strong sign of encouragement, reaffirming Bethlehem University’s vital role as a center of education, service, and hope in the Holy Land, and highlighting the deep bonds that unite the University with the wider Catholic and international community.
Bethlehem University expresses its sincere gratitude to the delegation for its solidarity and concern. The visit stands as a reminder to the students, faculty, and staff that they are not alone, and that the global Church and its partners continue to walk with them in hope and faith.
