At last, Catholic Radio Wales has its first DAB signal. Radio Maria United Kingdom is now broadcasting across Cardiff and the surrounding area. The new signal went on air on 15 July. It brings 24-hour Catholic programming to the Welsh capital for the very first time. Listeners can enjoy prayer, catechesis, music and conversation rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church. Cardiff joins a growing family of cities across the United Kingdom. Recent launches include Scotland and Bath. This launch opens a new chapter for Radio Maria, formerly known as Radio Maria England.
A Warm Welcome from the Archbishop
Above all, this launch is a moment of grace for the local Church. The Most Reverend Mark O’Toole, Archbishop of Cardiff-Menevia, warmly welcomed the news:
“I’m delighted to hear that Radio Maria is now broadcasting on DAB in Cardiff and the surrounding area. It’s a great joy for us in this part of Wales to receive such a great gift of evangelization and I’m sure it will not only be of great help and support to the Catholic community in South Wales, but also to many of our fellow Christians and also to those who are inquiring or curious about Jesus Christ and wanting to follow him more dearly and come to know him and encounter him within the Catholic community. So, congratulations to Radio Maria and thank you for coming to us.”
A Companion on the Journey of Faith
In addition, our Priest Director shared his joy at the news. Fr Toby Lees OP said:
“Radio Maria exists to bring prayer, teaching, companionship in faith, everything that tells of the love of God, into people’s homes, workplaces, cars, commutes and kitchens, wherever they may be. Cardiff and the surrounding area have a rich Catholic history, and we’re delighted that listeners there can now tune in on DAB and become part of our growing family of listeners across the UK, and we hope to feature many more voices from Wales on air in due course. Whether it’s the Rosary, the Mass, or simply a voice of hope in a difficult week, we hope Radio Maria becomes a real companion on the journey of faith for many new listeners in the Cardiff area.”
A Historic First for Catholic Radio Wales
What is more, this signal marks a genuine milestone for our mission. Rebecca Coyne, Operations Coordinator of Radio Maria United Kingdom, put it simply:
“Bringing Radio Maria to Cardiff marks a historic milestone as our very first digital broadcast signal in Wales. This new digital expansion allows us to deliver our programs that nourish people in their faith directly into homes, workplaces and vehicles across Cardiff, offering a spiritual home on the airwaves not only for the local Catholic community but also for those who are seeking something more than secular culture can provide.”
